STESA Strengthens Community Resilience Through Project BAMBOO: First-Aid Training Empowers Educators, Parents, and Stakeholders for Safer Schools
In reference to Regional Memorandum No. 376, s. 2026, entitled "Observance of the National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) 2026," which enjoins all schools to actively participate in the Schools Division Office of Laguna's observance of the National Disaster Resilience Month with the theme, "NAGHAHANDA at KUMIKILOS tungo sa PANATAG na BAGONG PILIPINAS," Santo Tomas Elementary School Annex (STESA) successfully conducted Project BAMBOO: Building Community Resilience – A First-Aid Training in cooperation with Capital One Philippines and the Philippine Red Cross Rizal-Muntinlupa Branch on July 31, 2026, at the school's covered court.
The initiative aimed to strengthen the disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities of teaching and non-teaching personnel, as well as the School Parents-Teachers Association (SPTA) Officers, by equipping them with essential first-aid knowledge and practical life-saving skills. Recognizing the school's vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of learners and stakeholders, the training reinforced the importance of preparedness, resilience, and shared responsibility in creating a safe, child-friendly, and disaster-ready learning environment.
The program formally commenced with a solemn Doxology rendered by the selected learners from Grade V–Marangal, setting an atmosphere of gratitude and unity. This was followed by the Welcome Message delivered by Mrs. Annabel V. Gumobao, Principal II, who emphasized that disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility and highlighted the significance of continuous capacity-building among educators, parents, and community partners in safeguarding the welfare of every learner.
The Rationale of the activity was presented by Sir Kenneth B. Hernandez, Internal Communication Coordinator and Faculty President, who underscored the relevance of Project BAMBOO in advancing the school's commitment to disaster resilience. He stressed that preparedness begins with knowledge and practical skills, enabling every participant to become an effective first responder during emergencies within the school and the community.
Messages of support and inspiration were delivered by Mr. Jeffe Viana, Operations Manager of Capital One Philippines, and Ms. Julie Larano, Community and Investment Department Head of Capital One Philippines.
They reaffirmed the company's commitment to corporate social responsibility by supporting initiatives that promote community resilience, health, safety, and volunteerism. They likewise expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to collaborate with STESA in empowering educators, parents, and stakeholders through meaningful community engagement.
The highlight of the event was the comprehensive First-Aid Training Proper facilitated by professional trainers from the Philippine Red Cross Rizal-Muntinlupa Branch. Participants received both theoretical discussions and hands-on demonstrations on essential first-aid procedures, including emergency assessment, wound management, bleeding control, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), choking response, fracture management, and other life-saving interventions. Interactive simulations further enhanced participants' confidence and competence in responding effectively to various emergency situations.
Following the training, Sir Jayson T. Alcozer, Master Teacher I, delivered an inspiring Giving of Challenge, encouraging participants to become proactive advocates of safety and preparedness by applying and sharing the knowledge they had gained. He reminded everyone that true resilience is demonstrated through readiness, compassion, and decisive action during times of crisis.
In response, Sir Carlo Magno R. Velasco, School DRRM Coordinator, together with Sir Jon Cello D. Subijano, School Junior Red Cross Youth Coordinator, formally accepted the challenge on behalf of the school community. They pledged to sustain disaster preparedness initiatives and strengthen emergency response mechanisms to ensure a safer and more resilient learning environment for all.
As a symbol of appreciation and continued preparedness, the activity culminated with the Awarding of Certificates to all participants and facilitators, followed by the Distribution of First-Aid Kits, further reinforcing the school's commitment to emergency readiness and response.
The program concluded with the Closing Remarks delivered by Mrs. Editha R. Raymundo, SPTA President, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Capital One Philippines, the Philippine Red Cross, the school administration, teachers, and all participants for their invaluable support in making the activity a meaningful success. She emphasized that the knowledge and skills gained during the training would greatly benefit not only the school but also the wider community.
