Though popular imagination associates the instrument with Hawaiโian culture, the ukulele instrument is actually Portuguese in origin.
In the 1800s, Portuguese immigrant cabinet makers Augusto Dias, Manuel Nunes, and Jose do Espirito Santo became the first documented ukulele makers in Hawaiโi. They reinvented the guitar ๐ฎ๐ข๐ค๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฆ, a popular folk instrument from their home island of Madeira, using Hawaiโian hardwoods instead of the traditional spruce or pine. The portable size and easy playability of the instrument contributed to the popularity of ukulele. However, it is the patronage of King Kalฤkaua, the penultimate monarch of Hawaiโi, that ensured Hawaiโian culture and society embraced the little Portuguese invention.
This National Arts Month, join us with acclaimed ukulele artist ๐๐๐๐. ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ณ. ๐๐ฒ๐ผ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ฃ. ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐พ๐๐ฒ๐ท๐ผ as he tackles the role of artistic expression in promoting disaster resilience in ๐๐๐จ๐๐ก๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ Episode 20.
