𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪 ☝️🤓

Though popular imagination associates the instrument with Hawai’ian culture, the ukulele instrument is actually Portuguese in origin.

In the 1800s, Portuguese immigrant cabinet makers Augusto Dias, Manuel Nunes, and Jose do Espirito Santo became the first documented ukulele makers in Hawai’i. They reinvented the guitar 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘦, a popular folk instrument from their home island of Madeira, using Hawai’ian hardwoods instead of the traditional spruce or pine. The portable size and easy playability of the instrument contributed to the popularity of ukulele. However, it is the patronage of King Kalākaua, the penultimate monarch of Hawai’i, that ensured Hawai’ian culture and society embraced the little Portuguese invention.
