โFilipinos commemorate the life and sacrifice of the former Senator Benigno โNinoyโ Aquino Jr. today, August 21, 2026, as the country observes Ninoy Aquino Day.

โThe annual observance marks the 43rd anniversary of Aquinoโs assassination on August 21, 1983, when he was shot after arriving at the Manila International Airport, which is now Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), following nearly three years of exile in the United States.

โThe date remains a special non-working holiday under Proclamation No. 1006, which listed Ninoy Aquino Day among the Philippinesโ special non-working days for 2026.

โBefore he became one of the prominent opposition leaders in the country, Aquino worked as a journalist and entered public service at a young age .
โ
โHe later served as the mayor of Concepcion, Tarlac, Vice Governor and Governor of Tarlac, and became a senator in 1967.
โ
โWhen Martial Law was declared in 1972, he was among the opposition figures who was arrested and imprisoned.
โ
โDuring his detention, he continued to campaign for democracy. Later, he sought medical treatment in the United States after suffering heart attacks in prison.
โ
โHe remained in exile for about three years before deciding to return to the Philippines in 1983.
โ
โHis return to the Philippines ended in a tragedy when he was assassinated after landing at the Manila International Airport, which ignited widespread political demonstrations and unrest.

โHis death became a major turning point in Philippine political history, which strengthened the opposition movement against the Marcos Administration, and contributed to the events that eventually led to the EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986.

โToday, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and the August Twenty-One Movement (ATOM) led a wreath-laying ceremony at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 to commemorate his 43rd death anniversary.

โHis message continues to be remembered through the words associated with his return to the Philippines: โThe Filipino is worth dying for.โ
