A coordination and exploratory meeting is being held today between the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) and RAPID Region 10 to discuss potential collaboration on a research-based extension project anchored on the DOST-funded initiative CHLOMET. The project, implemented under the leadership of Dr. Franch Maverick A. Lorilla and Engr. Diogenes Armando Pascua, focuses on the development of a portable and low-cost chlorophyll meter designed to help farmers monitor plant nitrogen levels in real time, optimize fertilizer application, and improve crop productivity.

The meeting serves as a platform to explore opportunities to deploy and validate CHLOMET in actual farming communities through partnerships with farmer groups and cooperatives supported by the RAPID Growth Program. Discussions center on possible pilot testing, farmer training, and participatory data collection to generate research outputs while delivering practical benefits to farmers. This engagement marks an important step toward translating research innovations into community-based extension interventions that promote inc

We started 2026 with a renewed commitment to strengthening research-based and community-responsive extension programs of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines โ€“ Cagayan de Oro Campus. In line with this direction, the Extension and Community Relations Division (ECRD) convened a coordination meeting on January 7, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the ECRD Office. The meeting aimed to align plans, review board-approved extension programs, and discuss completed research outputs of faculty and students that may be translated into extension initiatives for the year.

The meeting was attended by the College Extension Coordinators, namely: Dr. Macrine Grace G. Amato of the College of Medicine (COM), Ms. Florianne T. Consolacion of the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), Ar. Chris Francis N. Aspiras of the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA), Engr. Helen Grace B. Gonzales of the College of Technology (COT), Ms. Maria Angeles D. Hinosolango of the College of Science and Technology Education (CSTE), Mr. John Jarvey Babia of the College of Information Technology and Computing (CITC), and Jan Michael R. Remolado, PhD(c), RN of the College of Nursing (CON). The meeting was facilitated by the Extension and Community Relations Division.

During the discussion on board-approved extension programs, the coordinators reviewed the status, scope, and implementation plans of their respective college initiatives. Emphasis was placed on ensuring alignment with the Universityโ€™s strategic goals and responsiveness to identified community needs. Clarifications were made regarding timelines, partner communities, and documentation requirements to ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of integrating completed research outputs of faculty and students into extension programs. The coordinators shared potential research studies that may be translated into extension projects, reinforcing the Universityโ€™s thrust toward research-based extension. This discussion underscored the role of extension as a mechanism for transforming academic knowledge into tangible community impact.

Other matters related to the coordination, monitoring, and reporting of extension activities were likewise discussed. The Extension Coordinators were encouraged to strengthen collaboration within and across colleges and to closely coordinate with the ECRD for proposal enhancement, implementation guidance, and timely submission of reports.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment among the participants to advance inclusive, sustainable, and research-driven extension programs for 2026. The active engagement of the Extension Coordinators reflected a collective effort to ensure that the Universityโ€™s extension initiatives effectively translate research and innovation into meaningful service to communities.

Nugget 1:Start With the Community, Not the Proposal

Extension work fails when the community is just a backdrop.

Real Extension 101: Before you write anything, listen first. Sit with the barangay, listen to women, youth, farmers, fisherfolk. Let their felt needs shape your project, not your convenience or existing module.

Consultation is not a checkbox. It is the foundation of any efficient and impactful extension program.
