This significant research initiative explores how adult learners aged 40 and above experience self-empowerment while pursuing higher education โ a dimension of lifelong learning that has received limited scholarly attention. Guided by Knowles' Theory of Andragogy and Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory, the study employed a transcendental phenomenological approach, gathering data through in-depth interviews with five purposefully selected adult learners from an LGU-supported institution in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. Using Seidman's model of phenomenological interviewing and Creswell's modification of Moustakas' phenomenological method, the analysis generated four key themes: Inspiration, Role Management, Academic Growth, and Resilience.
The findings reveal that self-empowerment among adult learners develops through purpose-driven motivation, effective management of multiple roles, integration of prior life experiences into learning, and resilience that promotes confidence, identity transformation, and lifelong learning. These experiences served as pathways to transforming participants' self-concept and strengthening their commitment to pursuing personal and professional goals. The study contributes valuable insights to the limited literature on adult learners in LGU-supported higher education institutions in the Philippines, providing a basis for developing more responsive and inclusive policies and practices.
The research aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly ๐๐๐ ๐ (Quality Education) by championing lifelong learning and inclusive access to higher education, ๐๐๐ ๐๐ (Reduced Inequalities) by amplifying the voices and experiences of non-traditional learners, and ๐๐๐ ๐ (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by supporting adult learners in strengthening their employability and achieving personal and professional growth.
This remarkable achievement reflects CCCDO's unwavering commitment to excellence in research, innovation, and academic advancement. The publication of this article in an internationally recognized journal underscores the institution's growing contribution to interdisciplinary scholarship and its dedication to producing impactful research that uplifts the stories and aspirations of every learner โ regardless of age or background.
