Ilearn Educational Intervention and Therapy Center is the first center in Northern Mindanao to offer the Orton-Gillingham Approach in teaching children with reading problems. The Orton-Gillingham approach is a multisensory approach that involves the use of the visual, auditory, kinaesthetic and tactile learning pathways in order to enhance memory and learning. (International Dyslexia Association). It sought to provide not just a genuine application of the approach but also excellence in its service. Ilearn started operating on August 2, 2013, in the months that ensued; it became apparent that children with reading problems have also co-existing behavioural concerns. This eventually led to the opening of Ilearn’s occupational therapy services. With Ilearn’s dedication to serve its clients excellently and to the best of its capabilities, the client base grew tremendously from the seven students when it started and is expected to continually grow. Because of Ilearn’s commitment to continually serve the growing needs of its clients and support the families of the children, it took a risk in hiring a monthly visiting language and speech pathologist in 2014. This opened more opportunities for Ilearn to serve not just clients in Cagayan de Oro but also its neighboring cities. Ilearn opened the Orton-Gillingham Math intervention in 2016 as children diagnosed with learning disability may also present difficulty in understanding the different Math concepts. With Ilearn’s growth in client, employment and facility, it can now provide occupational and speech therapy and reading and math intervention services to a wider range of children with developmental concerns particularly those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Down syndrome, Intellectual Disability, Learning Disability and other related conditions.
