Vowel sounds and spellings are the MOST DIFFICULT patterns for many students to learn.

Most short vowels are rather close on the sound spectrum. The short vowel sounds a, e, and i are difficult to discriminate.

Consonants are either voiced or unvoiced.
Drills should be performed with children who have difficulty differentiating these sounds.
