I'm not just frustrated because Marcos was buried (clandestinely) in LNMB. I'm also frustrated about how the educational system failed us.
I am still in disbelief and disappointed on-
>How badly people are misinformed about the realities of that dark aspect of our history
>How people justify their arguments with fallacies and 'conspiracy' theories
>How people see the world in absolutes
>How critical thinking is an option instead of a need
>How those who speak out are shut down instead of listened to
>How those who try to share their knowledge are smart-shamed and bullied into silence
>How being the voice of the oppressed has now become a 'personal, selfish vendetta', and 'OA'
>How standing up to oppressors has earned us the titles 'bayaran', 'dilawan' and 'yellowtards' (also, 'bugok' and 'inatay')
>How apathy is seen as 'comfort' and even 'superiority'
>How there is an abundance of materials, but a refusal to read them because they're 'bias'
>How people can say 'move on' when they are enjoying the freedom that thousands have sacrificed for
>How people seem so informed even if they haven't lifted a finger to go beyond what their search bars can reach
>How people of all ages claim that we shouldn't be complaining because we 'weren't there when it happened'
>How people only decide between 'good' and 'bad' and fail to consider the 'cause', 'effect' and 'weight'
>How people cannot distinguish from 'just' and 'moral'
>How people get annoyed because this post is about politics and not about cheating penguins or juicy gossip (sorry to interrupt your timeline po, just posting about something that matters)
..and so much more.
If we fail to learn from history, we are bound to repeat it. But how can we learn from history if it is not taught in depth to begin with?
Those who say 'history is written by the victors', remember, during the Martial Law and at this point of time, there aren't any victors. All of us are fools. All of us have failed. All of us are victims. We're honoring a dictator (remember other dictators? Hi**er. Pot. Il. Stalin. Hussein.). We should be so proud.. not.
Since, like a thief, Marcos' burial has been underway, there are still things that can be done. If we can't exhume his body (wax figurine), don't despair. The next thing to do is to help our children, our students, be more informed than ever before. Help them think critically, help them evaluate what they read and ask them questions (and encourage them to ask questions too). Helping them think for themselves (and make well-informed, rational decisions) is not indoctrination. It's common decency. There is much work to be done. If we don't do it, no one else will. If we can't change this generation, we might as well help prepare the next one.
Lord knows- they need it.
