JOE BUSH (Dyobus) Long before DIY crafts became a trend, Filipinos were already coloring clothes at home with a small packet of dye called dyobus. But did you know that “dyobus” came from a real person’s name? In 1899, Joe Bush, an American, opened a laundry and dye shop in Plaza Sta. Cruz, Manila. Instead of focusing on washing clothes, he offered something unique for that time. His shop let people choose their own fabric colors. Later, he began selling fabric dye powders in small packets under the name Joe Bush. Over time, Filipinos turned Joe Bush into the everyday word dyobus, much like how tansan means crown cap today. Even when his shop disappeared, the name lived on in homes across the country. Did you know? In the 1970s, many Filipinos used dyobus powder for tie-dye shirts, making it part of both fashion and history. TANSAN To most people, it’s just a metal bottle cap. But for Filipinos, we call it tansan, and that word carries a surprising story filled with history, trivia, and childhood memories. In 1892, William Painter, an inventor from the United States, created the crown cap to seal soda bottles more effectively than cork stoppers. At the same time in Japan, an Englishman named John Clifford Wilkinson discovered a natural carbonated spring and started the Tansan Mineral Water Company. The word tansan means carbonated water in Japanese. When the drink arrived in the Philippines in 1902, it came sealed with Painter’s crown cap. It became so popular that Filipinos began calling the cap itself tansan. What started as a brand name became part of our language and everyday life. By the 1990s, tansan was more than just packaging. Kids collected them, played with them, and spun them across sidewalks on quiet summer afternoons. That tiny metal cap became a symbol of joy, play, and growing up. Kia ora! Kumusta! I am Christelle Quilang, 19 years old, born in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines and I have lived in New Zealand for 10 years. I study Psychology and Philosophy at the University of Auckland, through which I am also an athlete of its Cheerleading Association and an ambassador of Effective Altruism Auckland. I spend the rest of my time with family and friends and taking care of my 2 year old niece. I am an NZ blood donor and I have previously worked part time for 3 years and volunteered at a rest home. My highest aspirations in life are being the best caregiver and godparent to my niece and becoming a medical doctor.

I am grateful and excited for this opportunity to express my faith and to reconnect with my Filipino culture through this Sinulog Festival.

Senior Santo Niño has a special connection to my family.

Eleven years ago, my mother, my sister and I were in Cebu for our pre-departure orientation seminar. After which we visited Santo Niño Basilica to ask for protection for our journey to New Zealand and to give thanks for finally reuniting with my father and for this life-changing opportunity.

In 2013, my family was meant to tour my two grandmothers around Cebu, however the passenger ship they were on had an engine trouble and was drifting at sea. Santo Niño Basilica provided us with a venue to pray for their safety and to ease our worries. Our prayers were answered, they were rescued and sent back home safely.

Indeed, our faith is an anchor that makes us secure and hopeful in times of trials and storms in life.
