Engr. Fernandez, representing the Center for AI, attended the MOA signing alongside Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura II, USTP System President, who expressed full support for the project. The DOST-PCIEERD Grand MOA Signing was held last October 17, 2024, at the Sheraton Hotel, Manila. This yearโ€™s event marked the approval of over 70 projects, with a total funding of P935 million allocated to cutting-edge research and technological advancements.

Among these approved initiatives is the Nexus for Advanced Risk Reduction and Analytics System for the Philippine National Police - Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (PNP-COCPO), led by Engr. Jodie Rey D. Fernandez, head of USTPโ€™s Center for AI. The project exemplifies the Centerโ€™s focus on developing AI-driven solutions that enhance public safety and streamline law enforcement operations. This system will integrate AI and data analytics for real-time monitoring, GPS tracking, and resource management, providing the PNP-COCPO with state-of-the-art tools to improve efficiency and effectiveness in maintaining public safety.
Engr. Fernandez noted that the inclusion of the Centerโ€™s AI project in this prestigious lineup affirms USTPโ€™s leadership in AI research and its potential for transforming public service operations. The Center for AI has been steadily building a reputation as a key player in the application of AI technologies across different fields, and this latest approval serves as further validation of its impact. By focusing on practical applications of AI, the Center is pushing boundaries in research that can lead to real-world advancements. The Nexus project, which will be implemented in partnership with the PNP-COCPO, is a prime example of how the Centerโ€™s work is aligned with national priorities.

As the Center for AI at USTP continues to lead pioneering efforts in AI application, its collaboration with DOST and other government agencies demonstrates the crucial role academic institutions play in shaping the countryโ€™s technological future.

USTP is proud to announce its internationalization (IZN) involvement with Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia, for the conduct of the International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Computing, Engineering, and Science Education 2024 (InvENT2024). This is a signature program of the Asia Technological University Network (ATU-Net), which was inaugurated last 2023 in Brunei.

This event was co-hosted by the USTP and was held in Shah Alam, the capital of Selangor, from August 20โ€“21, 2024, respectively. The theme of the event is, Converging Innovation with Soul: AI in Entrepreneurship, Technology, and Education. The theme was selected in accordance with the growing concern about the fast-growing development of AI, which has now transcended almost every aspect of living.

The special highlight of the plenary on the first day was the speech given by the Malaysian Prime Minister, the YAB Datoโ€™ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, whose sharing was about integrating and guiding AI into civilized society as prescribed in Malaysiaโ€™s National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Roadmap 2021-2025. The second-day plenary revolved around the well-known and much-respected AI proponent and editor in chief of a few respected peer-reviewed journals, Prof. Dr. Hamido Fujita. His talk was about AI technology, innovation, application, and education.

USTP faculty members from the Computer Engineering Department, namely, Engr. Jodie Rey D. Fernandez and the department head, Engr. Mark Lister V. Nalupa were among the resource speakers for the training workshop on AI (please see separate posting on this.)

This event serves as a platform that will collate information from academics, industry, and government sectors through powerful speeches, informative exhibitions, and paper presentations on AI use and development in computing, engineering, science, and entrepreneurship.
