All journeys have a first stop, and for our new UCS Volunteers, that stop is 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗼: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲—parang 𝙪𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙖𝙠𝙖𝙮 𝙨𝙖 𝙟𝙚𝙚𝙥 bago magsimula ang mahabang byahe. Dito pa lang, ramdam mo na ‘yung 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙖-𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙮𝙖𝙝𝙚—new faces, new 𝙠𝙖-𝙗𝙞𝙮𝙖𝙝𝙚, at bagong kwento.

This event aims to welcome and engage with our new UCS Volunteers, giving everyone the chance to connect, 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙞-𝙠𝙬𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙤, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙞-𝙩𝙖𝙬𝙖. What was meant to be an orientation became more than just a set of talks and activities. It became a call to serve, a reminder that being a scholar is not only about the self, but about the community that we carry with us.

It was a day that planted the idea that leadership is rooted in service, and that our role goes beyond academics—it extends to making an impact where it matters most. FIOGET wrapped up, but the challenge it left us is clear: to rise not just as students, but as scholars ready to give back.

𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗺 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗯𝗹𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆

In a campus-wide poll conducted from April 28 to May 7, 2025, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) Trailblazer community revealed its electoral preferences ahead of the May 12 Philippine National and Local Elections, showing strong support for experienced legislators and reform advocates.

Former Senator Bam Aquino (KNP) led the survey with 366 votes, underscoring his enduring appeal among student voters. He was closely followed by another former senator, Kiko Pangilinan (LP), with 320 votes, while ex-Commission on Audit (COA) Commissioner Heidi Mendoza (IND) secured third place with 267 votes.

Also making it to the Top 12 were Luke Espiritu (PLM) with 220 votes and labor leader Ka Leody De Guzman (PLM) with 179. MKBYN-backed candidates Danilo Ramos (154 votes), Teddy Casiño (149 votes), and Ronnel Arambulo (136 votes) followed. Administration-backed candidates also made it: incumbent senator B**g Go (PDPLBN) with 137 votes and Senator Bato dela Rosa (PDPLBN)—both known Duterte allies. Gabriela Partylist Rep. Arlene Brosas (MKBYN) garnered 130 votes, while labor lawyer Sonny Matula (WPP) rounded out the list, tying with dela Rosa at 101 votes.

The survey was conducted online via the USTeP portal and offline through physical ballots distributed at designated lounges across the USTP Cagayan de Oro campus. While all online votes were properly validated, some physical ballots were invalidated due to missing details, such as student ID numbers or college affiliations.

Titled 𝘋𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘨-𝘛𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘨: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘻𝘦𝘳 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘪𝘥𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘺, the initiative was a collaboration with the USTP CdO Electoral Commission, supported by the USTP Digital Transformation Office and the USTP CdO Office of Student Affairs.

Moreover, the data presented in this survey do not necessarily reflect the views of the entire USTP student body, the university administration, its affiliates, or The Trailblazer Publication. The results merely represent the preferences of students who chose to participate during the official survey period.

On November 20, 2024, the 4-H Club USTP-CDO and Project 3K hosted the AGRIBIDA Growhouse X Garden Attack event at the Cafeteria Hall and Grow House located at the back of LRC Bldg. The program focused on urban gardening and introduced the initiative called "Garden Attack," which aims to transform open spaces into productive food gardens.

Ms. Angelie Azcuna Collera, head of the Center for Human Development, explained the concept behind "Garden Attack," describing it as transforming unused spaces into gardens. She emphasized the importance of teaching today's generation to grow their own food and advocate natural vegetable cultivation without synthetic fertilizers. Following her introduction, Ms. Maydene Demensana, facilitator of Growth House and Garden Attack, provided clear instructions for the activity.

Students gathered their tools and actively participated in hands-on training sessions at the Grow House. The program is led by skilled trainers and scholar-volunteers, focused on building practical knowledge, enhancing gardening skills, and creating livelihood opportunities. Through this initiative, student participants not only learned to cultivate gardens but also gained valuable insights for a sustainable and promising future.

This program offers specialized training that provides practical skills, valuable knowledge, and livelihood opportunities in partnership with the USTP Center of Human Development - Gulayan Sa Kabalayan CDO, Kids Who Farm, Global Peace Foundation, University Scholars Society, LGUs, and NGOs.
