A Historian, A Linguist, A Jesuit
Born on May 08, 1917 in Misamis (Ozamis City), Philippines, Fr. He took his course in Theology at Woodstock College, Maryland, USA and had a doctorate degree from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. He imparted his expertise in English, Latin, History, Classics, Rhetoric and Religion at the Ateneo de Manila University and at Xavier University-Ate
neo de Cagayan. As an internationally-recognized professor, Fr. Bernad taught Literature in Taiwan National University and Tamkang College of Arts in Taipei. He was editor of Journal of Philippine Studies (published quarterly at the Ateneo de Manila University) and founder editor of Kinaadman (Journal of the Southern Philippines-Xavier University). His collections include serials and journals, reprinted articles, Filipiniana Books, general collection (books in English), Holy Bible, Missalette and awards. Bernad who was known to be a modern genius in literature and history had published almost 30 titles including his first book Greenwood Tree: Essays on Filipino Literature in English. His article entitled " Catholicism in the Philippines" has been solicited to be included in the Cambridge Dictionary of Christianity.
