April 29–30, 2026 | Cagayan de Oro City - Ideas that shape communities and research that drives meaningful change took center stage as the Social Sciences Department - USTP CDO of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines actively participated in the:

"Lambigit 2026: The 3rd Northern Mindanao Research and Innovation Summit."

Bringing together leaders, innovators, and scholars from across the region, the summit served as a powerful platform where research moved beyond theory, transforming into solutions that respond to real societal needs.

A defining moment for the Social Sciences Unit emerged through the remarkable achievement of Ms. Danielle Rey Cimene, R.Pm., Instructor III, who secured First Place in the Humanities and Social Innovation Category during the oral research presentations. Her paper, “Social Connectedness: A Mediator Between Screen Time and Depressive Symptoms,” stood out for its timely relevance and profound insight into the mental health challenges faced in today’s digital age.

Her work highlighted the critical role of human connection in mitigating the psychological effects of increased screen exposure, an issue that resonates deeply in an increasingly technology-driven society. Through rigorous research and meaningful analysis, Cimene’s study not only contributed to academic discourse but also underscored the importance of empathy, awareness, and intervention in promoting well-being. She was awarded a certificate, token, and cash prize, in recognition not just of excellence, but of research that speaks to lived experiences and societal realities.

Equally noteworthy was the strong presence of other Social Sciences Unit faculty who presented their own meaningful and impactful research during the summit:
• Francis Thaise A. Cimene, PhD, LPT
• Fritzie B. Salado, PhD(c)
• Ma. Cynthia Fe V. Siwagan, PhD(c)
• Mico Ray E. Taglucop, DM
• Jerel G. Eduave, MGM, LPT
• James Edward B. Bete, MPA, LPT
• Leonnieses J. Kilaton, PhD, LPT

Their collective participation reflects a shared commitment to advancing knowledge, contributing to scholarly discourse, and addressing real-world issues through research grounded in the social sciences.

The involvement of the Social Sciences Unit in LAMBIGIT 2026 reaffirmed its role in nurturing researchers who not only examine society but also actively work toward its betterment. It stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, intellectual inquiry, and innovation in shaping a more responsive and inclusive future.

As the summit concluded, one message remained clear: research becomes truly meaningful when it connects with people, informs action, and inspires change.
