โ€œTaking Control: How Adolescents Can Manage Stress, Find Purpose and Thriveโ€

Being an adolescent is a challenging journey filled with hurdles to overcome. You may stumble and fall, but the key is resilience-to rise and fight again. The life of an adolescent is far from easy, as now you are old enough to grasp the complexities of family, academics, and relationships. It may seem like you're merely navigating a maze of problems, with each one being replaced by a new challenge with no time to catch your breath.

In this advocacy video, our aim is to shed light on how family issues and academic pressures can serve as the starting point for adolescent irresponsibility. Additionally, the tumultuous landscape of romantic relationship problems can further complicate matters. However, everything can change with effective communication and a deep understanding of someone's emotions, never invalidating them and always being empathetic. Being responsible isn't about striving for perfection; it's about striving to be better.

'Ikigai' is a Japanese concept that translates to "reasons for being". It's the intersection of four things: what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Finding your ikigai can give your life meaning and purpose. Adolescence is a time of great change and development, both stressful and opportunistic. By understanding stress factors and focusing on controllables, adolescents can thrive and find their Ikigai (purpose). As holism emphasizes interconnectedness, holistic personal development requires considering the whole person, not just isolated parts.

"All the charm, all the variety, all the beauty of life, is made up of light and shadow.โ€ - Leo Tolstoy

"Navigating the Impact of Stress: Understanding, Managing, and Thriving"

The concept of stress encompasses the body's reaction to various demands, whether they are physical, mental, or emotional in nature. Stressors serve as triggers for these reactions. As Hans Selye noted, our response to stress can profoundly affect us, with both beneficial and detrimental effects. The stress curve illustrates this duality, demonstrating how stress can motivate and enhance focus and productivity, but also lead to exhaustion and negative health outcomes when taken to the extreme. While stress can drive us to accomplish tasks and think more quickly, it's vital to recognize the importance of taking breaks when necessary to prevent its adverse consequences.

Stress is a product of our life experiences, whether positive or negative, and is influenced by our body's response to stressors. The discussion also distinguishes between types of stress, including acute, episodic, and chronic stress. Acute stress, the most common form, occurs in response to short-term stressors. Episodic acute stress represents a chronic pattern of frequent stress experiences, while chronic stress is the most damaging type, with long-term consequences. Those facing chronic stress should seek professional help. Stress can have a positive impact when it motivates us to pursue our life goals, but it can also harm our health. Therefore, understanding our body's limits and prioritizing self-care, including taking breaks, is crucial.

Adolescence is a phase marked by natural challenges that foster personal growth. Stress should be accepted as a normal part of life, particularly for adolescents who face pressures stemming from social dynamics, family relationships, academic demands, and self-doubt. Instead of viewing stress as a reason to give up, it should be seen as an opportunity for personal development. To effectively address stress, it's essential to recognize its signs, which manifest physically, cognitively, and emotionally. These signs can serve as indicators to improve one's physical and mental well-being. Coping strategies, such as time management, laughter, rest, physical activity, positivity, communication with trusted individuals, and meditation, are valuable tools to mitigate the negative impacts of stress and foster resilience.

โ€œLife is fair, in the sense that it is unfair to everyone else.โ€ - Ms. Psyche Bahinting (2023)

Adolescence is a time of great change and turmoil. As we navigate our way and figure out who we are and where we fit in the world, this can be a stressful time. We are pulled in two opposite directions: the desire to be different and the desire to fit in.

All the while, we silently fight the battles we face in our own lives.

On one side, we are drawn to the excitement of new experiences and the freedom to explore our individuality. We want to be unique, to stand out from the crowd freely. We want to express ourselves in ways that are true to who we are, even if that means going against the typical standards of society.

On the other hand, we are afraid of being judged and rejected.

โ€œWhat if I donโ€™t win?โ€
โ€œWhat if Iโ€™m not enough?โ€
โ€œI could have done moreโ€ฆโ€
โ€œWhat if I was born in another world where life was better for me?โ€

We worry about what others will think of us if we don't reach their expectations. We do what our mind wants us to do and reject our hearts, forbidding it of its own right to beat at its own rhythm. We cloud the person we โ€˜knewโ€™ we were and chase dreams that arenโ€™t ours. We worry about what we canโ€™t control. We conform to their expectations, expectations placed on them before and molded them to become who they are today.

But isnโ€™t change good? I often ask myself that, and wonder, when is change bad and when is it good?

This tug-of-war between change and conformity can be a source of stress for adolescents. It can be difficult to know which way to go, and we often feel like we are pulled in two different directions at once. But it is important to remember that this tug-of-war is a normal part of growing up. It is a time of exploration and experimentation, a time when we are trying to find our place in the world. It is through this process that we learn, grow, and ultimately forge our own unique identities.

There are many different sources of stress in our lives, whether we like it or not, hiccups are inevitable. Life is filled with dilemmas. We learned that if you canโ€™t control whatever happens, let it be and control what you can. In this tumultuous world filled with different morals, values, and virtues, there will always be mishaps and problems. You can choose to let it break you or make you. The choice is yours, and yours alone to make. Choose to be the better version of yourself, the you you want to be.

Don't be afraid to be different. Be unique, embrace your individuality, and don't let anyone tell you who you are. Your identity is something only you can define. Life is too short to be worrying about others' opinions of you and exceedingly long enough to figure out who you really are.

After all, we all are uniquely unique.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6

Navigating the whirlwind of adolescence has been quite a journey for us. It's a phase in life where change and challenges become daily companions, and it's no surprise that stress often tags along. But what we have learned is that how we choose to respond to stress matters the most, echoing the words of Hans Selye, who once said, "It is not stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it." In this lesson, we'll delve into the art of dealing with stress during adolescence and discover the power we have within ourselves to take control of it.

To begin with, recognizing the various types of stress that may enter our lives at this time has been eye-opening. We may recall our adolescent years when we regularly forgot things and couldn't figure out why. We were coping with cognitive stress without even knowing it. This insight has shown the need for having a positive mindset to alleviate stress and keep moving forward in life. Armed with this knowledge, we have become more aware of our life experiences and how they contribute to our physical and mental growth.

One of the most important lessons we've learned is that dealing with stress is a normal part of growing up. We discovered that stress can be both a motivator and a cause of discomfort as we encountered numerous problems such as academic expectations, confrontations with friends, and the search to uncover our actual selves. It motivated us to work harder, develop goals, and achieve fulfillment. However, we also learned that it is critical that we establish a balance and effectively handle stress to maintain our physical and mental health.

In this journey, we uncovered a toolkit of coping mechanisms to help us deal with stress. These involve cultivating a positive mentality, practicing mindfulness, engaging in physical activities, and getting support from loved ones. These strategies have become our closest companions, assisting us in developing resilience and overcoming hardship. We also learned the value of self-care, such as getting adequate sleep and engaging in activities that provide us happiness and relaxation.

Above all, we discovered that dealing with stress isn't always easy, especially when it comes unexpectedly. When we are grappling with the intangible grasp of stress, we know that reaching out to our family or confiding in our closest friends can serve as lifelines. It serves as a reminder that there's strength in vulnerability, and opening up can be the first step toward healing.

In conclusion, adolescence is a period of self-discovery and growth, and stress is an integral part of this journey. But we've come to understand that stress is not our enemyโ€”it's a powerful teacher. As we learn to embrace stress, comprehend its nuances, and master the art of managing it, we uncover the strength within ourselves to navigate life's ups and downs with grace and resilience.

The transition from carefree childhood to the complex world of adolescence is both a profound change and a period filled with challenges. Stress inevitably becomes a part of life during this phase, but it also offers opportunities for personal growth and resilience. With proper guidance and support, teenagers can acquire the skills to effectively handle stress and come out stronger.

It's crucial to encourage adolescents to identify signs of stress early and provide them with the necessary tools for coping. Teaching them various coping strategies, such as physical activities and relaxation techniques, empowers them to navigate life's ups and downs more effectively. Developing time management and self-care skills is essential for balancing their numerous responsibilities while preserving their mental and emotional well-being.

Additionally, fostering self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-compassion is vital in managing stress. Adolescents should be motivated to prioritize their mental health and recognize that seeking help and support is a sign of resilience, not weakness.

Families also play a pivotal role in supporting teenagers during these challenging times. By creating a nurturing and empathetic environment, parents and caregivers can assist adolescents in building the skills and resilience necessary to tackle stress and make healthier choices when confronting life's complexities.

Ultimately, while stress may be an unwelcome presence, it does not define an individual's future. With the right guidance and determination, adolescents can learn to conquer stress and emerge from this transformative phase of life equipped with valuable life skills and a more optimistic outlook on what lies ahead.

Stress is an inevitable part of adolescence, a period marked by significant physical, mental, and social changes. These stressors are the body's reactions to specific pressures, challenges, or situations, whether they are physical, mental, or emotional. They can encompass a wide range of factors, such as academic pressure, social dynamics, and personal doubts, and can have profound effects on the well-being of teenagers. Understanding the reasons behind adolescent stress and how it affects both physical and mental health is crucial for navigating this transitional phase effectively.

Adolescence is a time of substantial change and stress. Factors like academic pressures, peer influences, and family dynamics contribute to stress among teenagers. This stress can lead to various physical and mental health issues, including headaches, weight changes, lack of focus, negative thoughts, and memory problems. However, ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐™š๐™จ๐™จ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™–๐™ก because it enables people to detect its causes and manifestations, allowing them to respond proactively rather than reactively. It teaches individuals how to discern between good and negative stress, allowing them to use stress as a motivator while limiting its negative consequences. Furthermore, recognizing stress enables individuals to practice effective coping mechanisms, resulting in improved mental and physical health, as well as general well-being. Therefore, in Unit 5, we learn about positive and negative stress, the impact of chronic stress, and practical strategies to manage it, such as These tools empower us adolescents to navigate this challenging phase and emerge with resilience for adulthood.

In conclusion, we appreciate the relevance and value of this topic in our life as we reflect on the lessons acquired about dealing with stress during adolescence. Adolescence is a formative stage, and knowing stress and its management provides us with the tools we need to successfully traverse its obstacles. While stress is an unavoidable companion, we now have the means to reduce its effects and live healthier, more balanced lives. We may emerge from this stage of life with strength and resilience, prepared for the trip into adulthood, by emphasizing self-care, good time management, loving relationships, and engaging in stress-relieving activities.
