In celebration of World Asthma Day 2024, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has selected the theme of "๐ผ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ข๐ ๐๐๐ช๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ค๐ฌ๐๐ง๐จ" GINA emphasizes the need to empower people with asthma with the appropriate education to manage their disease, and to recognize when to seek medical help. Health care professionals are called upon to increase their awareness of the continuing avoidable morbidity and mortality from asthma, and the published evidence on effective management of asthma, so they are equipped to provide reliable information and optimal treatment for their patients.
๐ผ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ข๐ is one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases that affects over 260 million people and is responsible for over 450000 deaths each year worldwide, most of which are preventable.
Key universal issues on which education is required are under- or inaccurate diagnosis, underuse of anti-inflammatory inhaled corticosteroid inhalers, overuse, and over-reliance on short-acting beta2โagonist (SABA) inhalers, and poor recognition of patients requiring specialist assessment and further management. In low-middle-income countries, lack of availability of inhaled medicines and especially inhaled corticosteroid-containing inhalers is a major contributor to the fact that more than 90% of asthma deaths occur in these countries.
Policy makers and pharmaceutical industry are called upon to increase their awareness of the continuing preventable morbidity associated with this common disease in spite of the existence of highly effective controller treatments, and to increase their efforts to ensure that environmentally friendly inhaled medications are made available in all countries, โleaving no-one behindโ.

Although asthma cannot be cured, it is possible to manage asthma to reduce and prevent asthma attacks, also called episodes or exacerbations.
GINA has chosen โ๐๐ญ๐ฐ๐ด๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ข๐ฑ๐ด ๐ช๐ฏ ๐๐ด๐ต๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ข ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ฆโ as the theme for the 2022 World Asthma Day.
There are a number of gaps in asthma care which require intervention in order to reduce preventable suffering as well as the costs incurred by treating uncontrolled asthma.
Current gaps in asthma care include:
๐in equal access to diagnosis and treatment (medicine)
๐between care for different socioeconomic, ethnic and age groups
๐between wealthy and poorer communities and countries;
๐in communication and care across the primary/secondary/tertiary care interface
๐in communication and education provided for people with asthma, (quality of asthma care plans vs)
๐in asthma knowledge and asthma awareness between health care providers
๐in prioritization between asthma and other long term conditions
๐between prescribing inhalers and monitoring adherence and ability to use these devices;
๐exist for the general publicโs (non-asthmatics) and health care professionalโs awareness and understanding that asthma is a chronic (not acute) disease.
๐between scientific evidence and actual delivery of care for people with asthma.
Addressing these gaps can be partially achieved through provision of the annually updated evidence based GINA strategy documents.
However, implementing recommendations based on scientific evidence is challenging across the globe. Not all local solutions are applicable globally and similarly global recommendations may not be applicable locally.
The challenge posed by this yearโs theme is for international respiratory communities to work together with colleagues, patients and health care providers to identify and close the gaps in asthma care and to help implement and share innovative solutions locally and globally.

Children with asthma need an asthma management plan. The goal of the management plan is to prevent asthma episodes and help your child keep their asthma under control. https://www.aafa.org/asthma-treatment/
A treatment plan includes:
๐ Learning your childโs triggers and help avoid them
๐ Giving allergy and asthma medicines as directed by the doctor
๐ Tracking their asthma and recognizing early signs that it may be getting worse
๐ Knowing what to do when asthma is getting worse by having an Asthma Action Plan
