Stepping away from their usual campus life, the students of BS Development Communication-1 recently dove deep into the life of the Midkiwan, Bayanga Community, from October 26-28, 2025. This immersion was conducted in partnership with the Kaabag sa Kalambuan pinaagi sa Kabtangan sa Katilingban (4K) Project, underscoring our commitment to supporting indigenous and rural development.
For three impactful days, the students became temporary residents, immersing themselves completely in the community's rhythmโfrom the quiet early mornings to the late evenings. From the moment they arrived, the students were welcomed with open arms by their host families, and their enthusiasm made for a seamless transition.
What did this crucial three-day immersion look like? Guided by the principles of Development Communication and inspired by the 4K Project, the students spent their days shoulder-to-shoulder with the residents, participating in the actual local activities. This hands-on experience included:
โข Community Asset and Deficiency Inventory: Observing directly the community to document and identify existing assets and deficiencies.
โข Sharing meals and stories with their host families, building trust and gaining insights into the social and cultural nuances that shape local life.
โข Participating in daily chores, such as tending to local gardens or helping with livestock, providing genuine assistance and cultural integration.
โข Engaging in meaningful conversations and interviewsโthe DevCom students' primary taskโto document the community's history, challenges, and hopes.
Through these shared experiences and genuine exchanges, our students saw beyond the surface. They realized the profound simplicity and sincerity that defines daily life in Midkiwan, Bayanga, where human connection and compassion quietly thrive. These moments fostered a deep sense of empathy and humilityโa crucial lesson in the DevCom field. The true essence of this immersion was clear: to go beyond observing and truly understand the heart of what brings the community together and how partners like the 4K Project can make a lasting impact.
When the day of departure came, a real sense of longing and sorrow filled the air. Our students were no longer outsiders; they had become part of the Bayanga family. On the road home, they carried more than just memories. They carried a profound weight of gratitude, admiration, and appreciation, along with a silent promise to return and continue cultivating this vital partnership for community-led development.
This immersion trip was an invaluable opportunity to put theory into practice and learn from the best teachers: the people themselves.
