𝗣𝗡𝗨 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗼𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗜 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

After an impressive debut last year, securing the 1,050th spot globally, PNU continues to elevate its standing in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. In its sophomore outing, the National Center for Teacher Education broke into the top 1,000, claiming the 904th spot among the 2,016 participating universities worldwide.

The university also climbed the regional and local ranks, now sitting in 529th place among Asian universities and rising to 51st place among Philippine institutions.

The Linkages and International Office (LIO) coordinated the collection, consolidation, and submission of data for the UI GreenMetric assessment. This undertaking was a collective institutional effort, involving the submission and validation of sustainability-related data from PNU’s five campuses: Manila, North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The successful submission reflects the cooperation of various offices, units, faculty members, personnel, and other stakeholders who contributed data and supporting documents for the assessment.

The said ranking evaluates universities based on key sustainability areas, including Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, Education, and Governance and Digitalization. These areas examine not only physical campus infrastructure and environmental management but also the integration of sustainability into education, institutional policies, governance, and university-wide practices.

The UI GreenMetric Rankings evaluate the environmental commitments and initiatives of universities worldwide using 60 indicators across seven criteria. Driven by this year’s theme, “Advancing Sustainable Campuses through Governance, Digitalization, and Integrated Performance,” the program continues to unite universities globally in building a sustainable future.

PNU Visayas Plants PNU@125 Commemorative Trees during EGTEH Day 2026

Philippine Normal University Visayas planted five Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) saplings on September 5, 2026, as part of Environment and Green Technology Education Hub (EGTEH) Day 2026, held in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Philippine Normal School and National Science Month.
Designated as PNU@125 Commemorative Trees, the saplings represent the campus’ continuing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

One of the trees was planted by campus officials Dr. Ralger D. Jocson, Jr., Dr. Gliceria Arlyn G. Garancho, Dr. Aragon A. Dechimo, Jr., and Dir. June Faith G. Gumban.

Asst. Prof. Jonathan O. Hernandez, licensed forester, researcher, and science and environmental content creator, planted another tree together with the EGTEH Day 2026 Committee.

The faculty and administrative personnel were represented by Dr. Noel S. Marañon and Ms. Irene T. Briones, while the alumni and student sectors were represented by Mr. Antonio B. Sabedoria and Ms. Christel O. Laluan.

Members of the A Team of Modern Scientists (ATOMS) and Math Guild also planted one of the five commemorative Narra trees.
The activity brought together different sectors of the PNU Visayas community in a shared effort to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable practices on campus.

Sugilanong Lunhaw 2026 Brings Sectors Together for EGTEH Day 2026

Philippine Normal University Visayas convened participants from basic and higher education, government, civil society, and environmental groups for Sugilanong Lunhaw 2026: Conversations on Environmental and Green Technology Education on September 5, 2026, at the Cadiz City Arena.

Held under the theme “Green Legacy, Sustainable Futures,” the event formed part of EGTEH Day 2026, in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Philippine Normal School and National Science Month.

The broad participation reflected PNU Visayas’ role as the Environmental and Green Technology Education Hub (EGTEH) of the Philippine Normal University System, providing a venue for cross-sector dialogue and collaboration on environmental education and sustainability.

Participants included teaching and non-teaching personnel and learners from the Department of Education and the Alternative Learning System; personnel from national government agencies, including the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Budget and Management, and the Department of Justice–Parole and Probation Administration; and participants from state universities and colleges and private higher education institutions, including Central Philippines State University, State University of Northern Negros, La Consolacion College–Bacolod, North Negros College, John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation, Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias, and Colegio San Agustin–Bacolod.

The event also drew participants from civil society and environmental groups, including the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation, Visayas Native Trees Enthusiasts, Architects for Change–Mount Kanlaon Chapter, and Pintor Kulapol, as well as personnel from the City Government of Cadiz, including the Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office, Office of the City Agriculturist, and the Information Management Division of the City Mayor’s Office.

Serving as resource speaker was Asst. Prof. Jonathan “Ethan” O. Hernandez of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), a licensed forester, educator, researcher, and science and environmental content creator. Hernandez centered his discussion on ecosystem-based tree selection, stressing that successful greening and restoration begin not with planting, but with assessing the site and matching species with local conditions such as soil, climate, elevation, water availability, and existing vegetation. He emphasized that the “right tree in the right place” improves survival, supports biodiversity, and strengthens the ecological function and resilience of restored landscapes.

Drawing particular attention to native trees and the restoration of Negros forests, Hernandez explained how species diversity contributes to structural complexity, ecological functions, and resilience to disturbances and climate variability.
The program also recognized the winners of the EGTE EcoReel Challenge 2026, an online short-form video competition that encouraged learners from basic education to college to communicate green technologies, sustainable practices, and environmental solutions through creative digital content. The State University of Northern Negros (SUNN) garnered first place, while two entries from the Math Guild of PNU Visayas secured second and third places.

PNU Visayas extends its appreciation to Cadiz City Mayor Hon. Salvador Escalante, Jr. and Vice Mayor Hon. John Vincent Escalante for their support and for allowing the use of the Cadiz City Arena as the venue.

Through Sugilanong Lunhaw 2026, PNU Visayas continued to advance its EGTEH mandate by bringing together diverse sectors to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and promote collective action in environmental and green technology education.

Yet Pacquiao's contribution to Philippine sports is bigger than his victories. His greatest legacy lies in what his journey has come to represent: that excellence can emerge from humble beginnings, that circumstances need not dictate one's destiny, and that sports can become a powerful tool for personal transformation, social mobility, and national pride.

This is the kind of excellence that makes Pacquiao a fitting recipient of the Doctor in Physical Education (PE) and Sports, Honoris Causa, from the Philippine Normal University, the country’s National Center for Teacher Education.

PNU Visayas Launches Inaugural EGTE Quiz Bowl

Philippine Normal University Visayas (PNUV) launched the inaugural EGTE Quiz Bowl 2026: Clash of the Eco-Minds on September 3, 2026, at the Events Center of CityMall Cadiz. The academic competition formed part of the campus’ Environment and Green Technology Education Hub (EGTEH) Day 2026, which seeks to promote environmental literacy, sustainability education, and academic engagement among teacher education institutions.

The competition brought together eight teams from three higher education institutions: Philippine Normal University Visayas (PNUV) with three teams, the State University of Northern Negros (SUNN) with two teams, and the University of St. La Salle (USLS) with three teams. Each team was composed of two education students who answered questions covering environmental science, ecological systems, sustainability, green technologies, environmental policies, and contemporary environmental issues.

Following the presentation of the official competition mechanics, the teams proceeded through three progressively challenging rounds—Easy, Average, and Difficult. The questions required participants to recall information, interpret environmental concepts, and apply scientific understanding within the prescribed time limits.

At the conclusion of the regular rounds, SUNN Team 2, composed of Jacob Tarazona and Ramel Lipaopao, emerged in first place. PNUV Team 3, represented by Mark James Tapi-on and Jesery Espera, secured second place. A tie between USLS Team 1 and PNUV Team 1 for third place led to a Clincher Round, with USLS Team 1, composed of Fre Ann Grandia and Vince David Dagoy, ultimately securing third place.

Beyond the competition, the event provided a venue for interaction among students and faculty from the participating teacher education institutions. It also highlighted the relevance of environmental knowledge and sustainability-oriented learning in the preparation of future teachers.

The inaugural EGTE Quiz Bowl formed part of PNU Visayas’ continuing efforts to provide academic activities related to environment and green technology education. It also offered participating institutions an opportunity to engage in a shared academic activity centered on environmental and sustainability concerns.
