SCREENTINENCE: A Post-Pandemic Lexicon Discovery to Combat the Invisible Enemy
By: Dr. Manfred L. Magno
Applied Linguistics
One research study exploring online news reports about the impact of COVID-19 in the Philippines and the United States was critically examined and analyzed to identify possible implications for social media literacy, digital communication, and contemporary language development.
As the study closely examined authorial styles and linguistic choices, it identified various terms used by writers to introduce emerging information, describe unprecedented experiences, and encourage netizens to understand and respond to the social, behavioral, and health-related consequences of the pandemic. Language became an essential instrument for explaining unfamiliar realities and making rapidly changing events comprehensible to the public.
These lexicons played an essential role in making ideas understandable while allowing pandemic-related events to become contextually relevant and meaningful as part of a global public-health experience. Through language, people were able to name experiences that had previously been uncommon or unfamiliar in everyday communication.
Moreover, the study identified several pandemic-era and pandemic-related lexicons that, to some extent, became part of the everyday jargon of individuals whose lives were affected by the pandemic. Among the terms that became highly visible during this period were quarantine, social distancing, lockdown, isolation facility, community transmission, contact tracing, face mask, personal protective equipment (PPE), vaccination, vaccine rollout, asymptomatic, symptomatic, testing, remote learning, online learning, asynchronous learning, work from home, plantita, quarantini, e-numan, and add-to-cart, among others. Some of these expressions were established public-health or educational terms, while others emerged or gained new cultural meanings through everyday digital communication.
In a more precise and reflective sense, these words demonstrate how a major social event can accelerate lexical innovation. Language does not merely describe social change; it also provides people with conceptual tools for interpreting and navigating that change.
Ideologically, this linguistic development became a tool through which individuals could communicate with greater clarity and contextual understanding. However, another transformation gradually became visible. While society learned to use technology to remain connected, productive, informed, and socially engaged, many people also became increasingly dependent on screens. Screen exposure began to occupy more spaces in everyday life, making digital devices seemingly inseparable from communication, education, employment, entertainment, and social interaction.
Perhaps the pandemic has ended as an extraordinary global event, but one of its profound behavioral legacies continues to deserve attention: the normalization of extended screen engagement. What emerged as a necessary response to isolation and disruption may, for some individuals, have developed into an increasingly habitual relationship with digital screens.
This condition may be described through a new conceptual lexicon: SCREENTINENCE.
Painstakingly, many individuals may no longer recognize the extent to which screen use has become embedded in ordinary routines. The screen may be present while eating, studying, working, communicating, resting, traveling, and even preparing for sleep. What was once an emergency technological adaptation can become an unquestioned component of everyday life.
The challenge, therefore, is not technology itself. The challenge is the possibility of losing intentional control over one's relationship with technology.
This discovery seeks to encompass the broader behavioral and cultural dimensions of the post-pandemic digital experience. It aspires to encourage individuals to develop practical life-management strategies founded on self-care, self-discipline, digital awareness, and responsible screen use, rather than allowing technology to dictate the rhythm of everyday life.
Furthermore, this Applied Linguistics-Inspired Philosophical Innovation Novelty (ALIPIN) Framework proposes a tri-linear approach that focuses on transformative learning, cognitive power, and the development of an advanced digital-structured self. Through these dimensions, screentinence may be explored not simply as a newly coined expression, but as a conceptual framework for examining how language, cognition, behavior, and digital culture intersect.
This is not merely a post-pandemic lexicon. It is a proposed cultural and educational paradigm intended to guide, protect, and promote healthier practices in screen use across generations, including students, parents, professionals, educators, researchers, and other members of an increasingly digital society.
The purpose is not to reject technological advancement. Rather, it is to encourage people to become more conscious of how technology influences attention, habits, communication, productivity, relationships, and personal well-being.
Be informed today. Start owning your digital self. Let this workbook become a practical companion whenever you experience screen distraction, digital fatigue, compulsive checking, or difficulty disengaging from your devices.
This is not an anti-technology book. It is a pro-human perspective. Its purpose is to preserve human capacity, attention, creativity, relationships, and potential while encouraging individuals to become more intentional users of technology.
The objective is simple yet profound: do not allow the screen to become the master of the human user. Learn to control, regulate, and manage your engagement with screens with greater awareness, grace, tranquility, and mental agility.
Be screentinently healthy.
This profound change is not merely about introducing a new word or assigning a new meaning to an existing experience. It is an attempt to develop a social and linguistic intervention that can stimulate conversation about one of the most significant behavioral challenges of contemporary digital life: the increasing integration of smartphones and screens into personal identity, communication, education, work, entertainment, and social participation.
From an Applied Linguistics perspective, screentinence may serve as a conceptual lens through which language and social behavior can be examined together. A newly proposed lexicon becomes meaningful when people can understand it, relate it to lived experience, discuss it critically, and use it responsibly. Its value, therefore, is not determined merely by its novelty, but by its capacity to generate meaningful communication and social awareness.
Let this concept become an eye-openerβan invitation to understand your digital habits more deeply and to recognize that disconnecting from a screen does not mean disconnecting from life.
Instead, sometimes, disconnecting from the screen is a way of reconnecting with yourself, with other people, and with the world beyond the screen.
SCREENTINENCE is a proposed word for a growing post-pandemic reality.
