Every time Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao stepped into the boxing ring, it felt as though the whole Philippines was watching. Families gathered around their televisions. Friends crowded into small spaces. Even those who rarely followed boxing found themselves cheering for him. His fights became shared moments of excitement and national pride. But long before he became the "People's Champ," Pacquiao was just a boy from General Santos City who grew up in poverty.

Born on December 17, 1978, he experienced the limitations that came with having few opportunities. Boxing eventually became more than a sport to him; it became a chance to pursue a better life. Through years of training, sacrifice, and determination, he turned that chance into a career that would make history. He became the first and only boxer to win world titles in eight different weight divisions, a feat recognized by Guinness World Records.

However, his rise was not simply a story of talent. Boxing demanded discipline, patience, courage, and commitmentโ€”qualities that extended beyond the ring. His story became an example for many young Filipinos who faced their own limitations, showing how determination can turn a difficult beginning into an opportunity to pursue something greater.

Now, his journey has been recognized by the Philippine Normal University community. On September 16, 2026, PNU conferred upon Pacquiao the degree of Doctor in Physical Education and Sports, Honoris Causa. The honorary degree was endorsed by the PNU Academic Council and Board of Regents and approved by the Commission on Higher Education through CEB Resolution No. 625-2026.

Recognizing not only his achievements as an athlete but also the values that shaped his journey, the honorary degree acknowledged his discipline, perseverance, and commitment. For many Filipinos, Pacquiao's story has never been confined to what happened inside the ring. It is a story of a young boy who pursued a dream, an athlete who made history, and a public figure whose journey reached beyond sport. He may have made his name in the ring, but his story has always been more than the man in it.

MANILA โ€” The Philippines recorded its strongest performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2025 since joining the international assessment in 2018, the Department of Education (DepEd) said.

A total of 8,072 15-year-old Filipino learners from various schools participated in the assessment. They were assessed in Science, Reading, and Mathematics. The country gained 20 points in reading, increasing from 347 in 2022 to 367. Mean scores in science and mathematics also increased, with science rising by 17 points to 373 and mathematics by 16 points to 371.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which manages PISA, recognized the progress of the Philippines.

"No country has improved its reading skills faster than the Philippines," OECD Director for Education and Skills Andreas Schleicher said.

Hindi ba't iyan ang pangunahing layunin ng isang g**o? Ang pumasok sa silid-aralan, humarap sa mga estudyante, magbahagi ng kaalaman, at hubugin ang kanilang mga pangarap. Ngunit bakit tila hindi lamang pagtuturo ang trabaho nila sa Pilipinas?

Bakit ang oras na dapat sana'y para sa aralin ay nauubos sa paggawa ng mga ulat at dokumentong walang katapusan?

Bakit sila ang tinatawag upang gampanan ang karagdagang tungkulin tuwing halalan?

Bakit kailangan pa nilang tumulong sa paghahanda at pagpapanatili ng mga pasilidad ng paaralan?

Sa bawat gabing dapat sana'y pahinga na, may mga papel na kailangang tapusin. Sa bawat araw na dapat sana'y para sa sarili, may panibagong responsibilidad na kailangang harapin. At ang mas masakit pa, kahit lumipas na ang ilang taon, mababa pa rin ang sahod na natatanggap nila.

Patuloy silang naglalakad sa landas na puno ng dagdag na gawain, mahabang paghihintay bago makamit ang promosyon, at mga pabago-bagong kurikulum na sumusubok sa kanilang kakayahan.

Hindi mahirap mahalin ang pagtuturo. Mahirap lamang itong ipaglaban sa isang bansang tila sanay nang humingi ng higit pa sa kakayahan ng mga g**o, ngunit patuloy namang nagkukulang sa pagbibigay ng suporta at pangangailangang nararapat para sa kanila.

Two men were arrested in Bacolod City after police seized โ‚ฑ442,000 worth of suspected shabu in two separate buy-bust operations on September 6, 2026.

The City Drug Enforcement Unit conducted a larger operation in Purok Kagaykay, Barangay 2, where they apprehended 58-year-old "Debs," identified as a high-value target and a person monitored by the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council. Authorities recovered 14 sachets containing roughly 60 grams of suspected shabu valued at โ‚ฑ408,000, plus the buy-bust money.

Meanwhile, Police Station 8 carried out a separate operation in Barangay Tangub that led to the arrest of 42-year-old upholstery worker "Noy," described by police as a street-level drug offender. Authorities recovered six sachets containing around five grams of suspected shabu worth โ‚ฑ34,000, along with a coin pouch and buy-bust money.

Bacolod City police seized approximately 65 grams of suspected shabu.

Both suspects remain under police custody and they will face charges under Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Umabot sa โ‚ฑ19.07 trilyon ang outstanding debt ng National Government (NG) sa pagtatapos ng Hunyo 2026, kasabay ng patuloy na pagpopondo sa mga pampublikong programa at malawakang proyektong imprastraktura ng pamahalaan.

Kumpara sa naitalang utang noong katapusan ng Mayo na โ‚ฑ18.55 trilyon, makikitang tumaas ito ng 2.80% ฮฟ โ‚ฑ518.98 bilyon. Inihayag ng Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) na ang pagtaas ng utang ay resulta ng pagkuha ng parehong domestic at external na utang.

Nanatiling domestic debt o mga lokal na obligasyon ang bumubuo sa pinakamalaking bahagi ng utang na naitalang umabot sa โ‚ฑ12.84 trilyon, matapos itong madagdagan ng โ‚ฑ342.33 bilyon. Samantala, ang external debt o panlabas na pagkakautang naman ay tumaas ng โ‚ฑ176.66 bilyon, umabot sa โ‚ฑ6.23 trilyon.

Kung ihahambing sa antas noong Disyembre 2025, lumalabas na lumago ng 5.96% ang domestic debt, habang tumaas naman ng 11.38% ang external debt.
