Wait, what?!

Earth was predicted to spin faster today (July 9), making this one of the shortest days ever recorded.

This is happening because of where the moon is positioned today. When it's farther from Earth's equator and closer to the poles, our planet spins faster.

We're talking about 1.3 to 1.51 milliseconds shorter than usual - tiny amounts that only atomic clocks can detect, but your phone will still show 24 hours.

Our days have been getting longer for billions of years. About 1-2 billion years ago, a day was only 19 hours long because the moon was closer to us.

But lately, Earth's been breaking records. We had the shortest day ever recorded on July 5, 2024 - 1.66 milliseconds short of 24 hours.

Climate change is actually affecting this too. Moving ice and groundwater has been adding 1.33 milliseconds to our days per century. Even earthquakes can change how fast we spin - the 2011 Japan earthquake shortened the day by 1.8 microseconds.

This will happen again on July 22 and August 5. Nature's been fine-tuning time long before we invented watches.

What we share online can have consequences in the real world.

On Monday's Social Media Day, and every day, take a moment to pause to verify information by asking basic questions and doing research before sharing content online.

Celebrated annually on the 29th of June, ๐™„๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง๐™ฃ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™–๐™ก ๐™๐™ž๐™จ๐™๐™š๐™ง๐™ข๐™–๐™ฃ ๐˜ฟ๐™–๐™ฎ honors all fisherfolk around the globe who dedicate and risk their lives in traversing the uncertain tides to bring seafood to our plates.

For an archipelagic country, millions of Filipinos rely on the fisheries industry for food, as fish is an accessible and ideal source of protein and minerals. This, in turn, emphasizes how essential the roles of our Filipino fishermen are in contributing to our daily diet needs.

It already requires immense strength to withstand rough waves and tropical wraths, thus, further resiliency in an administration that overlooks the fisheries sectorโ€”particularly the municipal fisherfolks, should not be prolonged. Our small-scale fishermen continue to experience steep and unjust competitions with commercial fishing corporations within the 15-km municipal waters on a daily basis, despite the domain being legally reserved for the municipal fisherfolks.

On this International Fisherman Day, as we salute the heroes of our pelagic waters, our call for equity among Filipino fisherfolks and urgent priority to their sector remains steadfast and will not falter.
