What if you accidentally invented a material that would lead to a Nobel Prize?
Together with Konstantin Novoselov, Andre Geim used Fridays to carry out quirky and fun experiments they didn't have the time to do during their research projects.
One of these Fridays, they started experimenting with graphite and tape and managed to make the new material graphene.
After successfully producing graphene, Novoselov and Geim mapped its properties: a one-atom-thick layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice.
This makes graphene incredibly thin but still incredibly strong. Graphene is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It's also almost entirely transparent yet very dense.
Its invention has led to new possibilities within materials technology and electronics.

His pioneering work in digital networking and advocacy for open Internet access earned him the Turing Award, the Marconi Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
