At the very beginning of Women’s Month, a time meant to honor the strength, dignity, and invaluable contributions of women, a sitting congressman chose to utter malicious, degrading remarks about Anne Curtis. This is not merely insensitive. It is unacceptable. It is reckless. And let us be clear: this is not an isolated comment—it is a symptom of a culture that still believes women’s bodies are open for commentary and their worth negotiable.

Words are never “just words,” especially when spoken by those entrusted with leadership. When a public official reduces a woman to a punchline of lewd insinuation, it is not harmless banter. It is normalization. It is reinforcement. It is permission granted to a society that already struggles with objectification. And that is dangerous.

The NEUST–COED Social Studies Club stands firm and unequivocal in denouncing this remark. We reject any statement that demeans, degrades, or disrespects women, whether disguised as humor, excused as spontaneity, or defended as freedom of speech. There is no justification for language that strips a woman of dignity. There is no excuse for rhetoric that trivializes her humanity.

Women’s Month is not decorative. It is not ceremonial. It is a reminder of battles fought and battles still ongoing for equality, for safety, and for respect. To begin this month with language that undermines these very principles is not just disappointing, it is deeply alarming.

As students of social studies, we believe in responsibility and accountability. We believe that leadership demands integrity. We believe that power requires restraint. Public office is not a shield against criticism. Authority is not a license to demean.
