True Competence Stems from Kindness: An Address to the GCA Graduates of 2026

By Roselle Pineda
GCA School Director

Growing up, I often felt like an outcast.

I was not the prettiest, nor the most lovable child in school. I was talented and often at the top of my class academically—but these did not protect me from being called names, from being bullied, or from constantly being compared to my more well-behaved older brother who was four years ahead of me in the same school.

“Bakit ang kuya mo mabait?” they would say. “Babae ka pa naman, ikaw ang magaslaw at masuway” they would quip.

In my grade school report cards, my teachers would often write: Excellent in academics but has an attitude problem.

Perhaps this was because I was not the typical student who would simply obey without question. I was often labeled undisciplined—scolded for asking too many questions, for questioning too much.

Hindi mabait. Hindi isang mabuting bata. Hindi lalaking mabuting tao.

These were things that I would hear growing up that somehow made me think, I do not belong. An outcast. So when I was writing this address, and had a chance to reflect on this year’s graduation theme— “Filipino Graduates: Prepared to Lead with Competence and Character” (“Pilipinong Nagsipagtapos: Handang Mamuno nang May Kakayahan at Mabuting Pagkatao”)— I immediately though about what it means to have “character” or “mabuting pagkatao” and subsequently, to be competent.

Is it enough to be obedient and quiet to be considered one “of character”? And is it enough for these qualities to help you thread through life with competence?

If there is one thing that Greenlight Children’s Academy (GCA) has taught us, it is that being a mabuting tao—being truly kind or a good person—goes far beyond obedience. In fact, sometimes, it requires the courage to do the opposite: to question, to think beyond what is given, to step outside of ourselves. To care. To truly live up to being “the school that cares.”

To care means to recognize the diversity of people around us—to recognise and extend kindness to those who are different from us in gender, in (religious) belief, in class (status), in age, in experience or backgrounds.

This is what GCA has instilled in its pupils, it’s teachers, administrative personnel, and hopefully, even the parents of our pupils: not just discipline, but empathy; not just compliance, but awareness.

Because the truth is, real competence is rooted in kindness.

It comes from understanding that we do not exist alone—that we are always part of a community, both local and global. And when we recognize this, we begin to see the power of diversity, the importance of questioning, and the courage it takes to ask difficult questions.
From there, true competence emerges: the ability to imagine and create solutions—not just for ourselves, but for others.

In a world that is increasingly divided, uncertain, and in pain, we need more than intelligence. We need kindness. We need courage. We need people who are willing to question, to listen, and to act with care.

We need graduates who will not only succeed—but who will stand on the right side of history.

This is what it means to lead with both competence and character.

Today’s graduation marks the beginning of that path.

So to the graduates: Go forth—not just with knowledge, but with compassion. Not just with skill, but with courage.

Always be reminded that you are part of something larger than yourselves— a collective we call humanity.

Congratulations GCA Graduates of 2026!
