Advancing efforts toward gender sensitivity from the grassroots, Kasang-GAD, in partnership with the office of the Lupong Tagapamayapa, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), and Barangay Council of Barangay Baan Km.3, initiated โ€œGet GAD-ducated: Ginagalang. Araw-araw. Dapatโ€ seminar, held at Baan Km 3 Covered Court, November 26.

Officially commencing the series of discussions, third-year sociology major Ms. Trisha May Bayonas tackled S*xual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE), differentiating the concepts from each other.

In her discussion, Ms. Bayonas underscored that people should be free to express themselves without fear of discrimination or ridicule, saying, โ€œNo matter what your sexual orientation is, dili dapat ni siya mag-limit kung unsa imong gusto buhaton. And dili nato dapat kataw-an, i-judge, or i-bully ang usa ka tao just because lahi iyang sexual orientation.โ€

Expanding the conversation, another third-year sociology major Ms. Krizia Dizon discussed gender sensitivity, emphasizing the importance of understanding diverse identities, respecting personal boundaries, and recognizing everyday situations where biases often appear.

During her talk, Ms. Dizon stressed that gender sensitivity goes beyond being a concept and requires respect and understanding for people of all identities.

โ€œGender sensitivity is not just a conceptโ€”it is a must for everyone to respect and understand our different stories, challenges, and opportunities,โ€ said Dizon.

Also gracing the event, Gender and Development (GAD) advocate Dr. Ordem K. Maglente delved into the law, putting focus on the Republic Act 11313, also known as the Safe Spaces Act or Bawal Bastos Law โ€” the law that protects individuals from gender-based sexual harassment (GBSH) in public spaces, workplaces, schools, training institutions, and online.

As she shared, Dr. Ordem also pointed out that real respect should not depend on a personโ€™s identity or status and must remain unconditional.

โ€œAng respeto ihatag nato sa tao tungod kay siya tao; nothing more, nothing less,โ€ said the professor.

Wrapping up the seminar, organizers encouraged participants to apply the lessons on gender sensitivity, respect, and inclusivity in their daily lives, highlighting Kasang-GAD and its partnersโ€™ commitment to fostering a more understanding and equitable community.

๐™Ž๐™Š๐™‚๐™„๐™€ is actually three different concepts!

Itโ€™s a common misconception that SOGIE is one thing. Your attraction, your identity, and your expression are all different!
