Security guard Renz Abelita was stationed outside a pawnshop in Pasay when he began noticing several children who often stayed near his post.
During one of the quiet periods at work, Renz asked them to write their names. The children could tell him what their names were, but when he asked them to put those names on paper, they did not know how.
That was when he decided to start teaching them.
He began with something simple by showing them how to write their own names. As the children became more interested in learning, Renz continued teaching whenever there were few or no customers at the pawnshop.
What started with one child eventually grew to several children from the area.
The lessons also became more organized. Renz taught basic reading and writing, ABAKADA, letters from A to Z, and counting. At night, he would prepare lesson plans for their sessions so he would already know what to teach when he had time during his shift.
He even gave the children activities and exams to check what they had learned. As the lessons continued, Renz shared that he could see their improvement.
His efforts later gained attention after a couple passing through the area saw him teaching one of the children and took a photo. The image spread online, and people began referring to him as “Sir Sekyu” and “sekyu-guro.”
Renz later shared that becoming a teacher had actually been one of his dreams. Life eventually led him to work as a security guard instead, but the opportunity to teach found him in a different way.
He also said he wanted the children to continue learning because he did not want them to experience the same difficulties he had faced after being unable to finish his own studies.
Renz may have been assigned there to guard a pawnshop, but during his quiet hours, he also found time to help children learn how to read, write, and count.
