The Social Work Department successfully conducted the two-day Final Case Conference for the 3rd Year students enrolled in SW 196 – Field Instruction I, participated in by agency field instructors, school field instructors, panelists, faculty members, and student social workers.

The activity served as a culminating platform for the presentation of students’ casework and groupwork experiences throughout the duration of their field instruction. More importantly, it became an avenue for reflection on the realities, challenges, and responsibilities embedded in the practice of social work.

Throughout the presentations, students demonstrated that beyond theories learned inside the classroom, field instruction is where theory truly meets reality. The experience highlighted that while motivation may waver, it is discipline, commitment, and a genuine heart for service that sustain social workers in responding to the needs of clients and communities.

The conference also emphasized the vital role of social workers as advocates, mediators, and resource linkers, especially in situations where resources and opportunities remain limited. Through meaningful interventions and sustained engagement, students were reminded that social work is not merely compliance with academic requirements, but a profession grounded in empathy, dignity, and service.

As reflected during the closing remarks, may future social workers never grow indifferent to the people they serve. For some clients, seeking help may already be their final attempt to be heard, understood, and supported.

Indeed, the Final Case Conference stands as a testament to the growth, resilience, and dedication of the 3rd Year Social Work students as they continue to embody the values and principles of the profession they have chosen to pursue.

BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Social Work successfully conducted “𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗡𝗚𝗢𝗡: Pagsabot sa Gender Bias ug Paggamit sa Gender-Fair Language alang sa patas ug respetadong pakigkomunikar sa katilingban” on May 6, 2026, at the Bashai Multipurpose Hall, strengthening participants’ understanding of gender sensitivity and inclusive communication.

The activity formed part of the ongoing Training of Trainers (TOT) initiative under the TULAY Project (Phase 2), aimed at preparing participants to become community-based gender advocates and facilitators in their respective puroks. The session featured discussions on proper gender-fair language facilitated by John Michael V. Acuzar, RSW, while Desiree F. Gonzales, PhD led the discussion on gender bias. Donalie G. Gesta, RSW also facilitated the gender-fair language workshop and delivered the opening remarks during the program.

Through the collaborative efforts of social work interns, faculty members, and community partners, participants were able to enhance their awareness of respectful and inclusive communication practices. The activity also included a workshop and crafting of a resolution for the TOT, encouraging participants to actively promote gender sensitivity and equality within their communities. Participants actively shared their insights and experiences during the discussions, showing their willingness to help create safer and more respectful spaces for everyone in the community.

The importance of demonstrating is evident as the initiative continued on April 29, 2026, at Bashai Community Hall, Brgy. Baan KM3, Butuan City, where Project TULAY (Phase 2), an extension project of the Department of Social Work, conducted a seminar focusing on the transfer and imparting of knowledge on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) with 34 participants. The session featured GBV Watch Group participant Ma’am Jermelita A. Pia, who discussed the concept and importance of understanding GBV, while Ma’am Mischelle M. Madamesila, RSW, and Ma’am Donalie G. Gesta, RSW served as evaluators to ensure clarity, accuracy, and effectiveness of the discussion. This activity aimed to strengthen the participants’ capacity to understand and cascade GBV-related knowledge within their respective communities.

The initiative continued on April 22, 2026, at Bashai Community Hall, Brgy. Baan KM3, Butuan City, where Project TULAY (Phase 2), an extension project of the Department of Social Work, together with Desiree F. Gonzales, PhD and Nico Jan D. Bautista, RSW, conducted a session on Conflict Resolution and Problem Solving with the GBV Watch Group participants with 13 attendees. The discussion focused on understanding and addressing conflicts within relationships, particularly among couples, as well as other forms of interpersonal conflicts related to Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Through a seminar-style discussion, participants were guided on practical ways of managing disagreements, improving communication, and promoting healthier and more respectful relationships within the community.

On April 15, 2026, at Bashai Community Hall, Brgy. Baan KM3, Butuan City, Project TULAY (Phase 2), an extension project of the Department of Social Work, conducted a Gender and S*xuality Training (GST) Capacity Building for the GBV Watch Group composed of pioneering members from Purok 6, Purok 7, and Purok 3A with 15 participants.

The activity was carried out through interactive discussions, sharing of lived experiences, and participatory learning sessions that focused on gender concepts, SOGIE, gender-fair language, and the realities of gender bias in everyday life. This initiative aimed to strengthen the participants’ knowledge and skills in identifying and responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV), empowering them to take an active role as community advocates for gender sensitivity, equality, and inclusion within their respective puroks.

BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Social Work successfully conducted “PAMULONG: Pagsabot sa Balaod alang sa Kababayen-an (RA 9262) ug Epektibong Pagpahayag sa Publiko” on April 24, 2026, at the Bashai Community Hall, Purok 3A, Baan Km. 3, equipping participants with legal knowledge and communication skills.

The activity formed part of the Training of Trainers (ToT) initiative for participants from Puroks 3A, 6, and 7, aimed at preparing community members to become effective educators in their respective areas. The session featured expert-led discussions, with Nizza L. Villahermosa, LPT, MSTSS facilitating the public speaking workshop, and Nico Jan D. Bautista, RSW leading the discussion on Republic Act 9262 or the Violence Against Women and Their Children Act.

Through the collaborative efforts of social work interns and faculty members, participants gained a deeper understanding of legal protections for women and children, alongside essential communication skills for discussing sensitive issues with confidence and clarity. Active participation and reflections from attendees demonstrated their readiness to take on their roles as community trainers, reinforcing the Department’s commitment to community empowerment and grassroots education.

BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Social Work continued its advocacy for inclusive communities through the conduct of “ILA-ILAHA: Pagsabot sa Gender Socialization ug Pagrespeto sa Nagkalain-laing Identidad” on April 17, 2026, at Barangay Hall, Baan Km. 3.

The activity formed part of the Training of Trainers (ToT) initiative for participants from Puroks 3A, 6, and 7, aimed at preparing community members as future trainers in their respective areas. The session featured faculty speakers, with Rhea Lynne E. Fuentes, RSW, MSSW leading the discussion on SOGIESC (S*xual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and S*x Characteristics), and Mischelle M. Madamesila, RSW facilitating the discussion on gender socialization, using clear explanations and relatable examples.

Through the combined efforts of social work interns and faculty members, the activity created a safe and engaging learning environment where participants were encouraged to reflect, ask questions, and share insights. The discussions enhanced participants’ understanding of gender concepts and prepared them to confidently share these learnings within their communities, reinforcing the Department’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and respect at the grassroots level.
