Always promote traditional art

𝐎𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐎𝐍| Art Without Soul

AI-generated art crafting bags in art competitions, making it controversial between traditional artists questioning the true nature of creativity and craftsmanship. AI-generated works should be separated from human art, valuing the true nature of artistry.

The recent Facebook post made by CAGELCO 1 (Cagayan 1 Electric Cooperative, Inc.) on September 10, 2024, has triggered concerns from the majority of the art community. An artwork made by AI competing in a national level of art competition against the organic ones. PHILRECA (Philippine Rural Electric Cooperatives Association) hosted the competition in celebration of their 45th Annual General Membership Meeting of PHILRECA last August 2024.

The said output of Naomi Faye was not able to be included in the official entries under CAGELCO 1 due to non-submission of the online form, yet she received a special recognition and cash prize from the company during the awarding ceremony held last September 6, 2024, at SM City Tuguegarao.

Art as defined by Oxford Dictionaries is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” Meaning to say, works resulting from human imagination and creative thinking skill.

As a participant, even if the use of AI tools is not mentioned in the mechanics of the contest, the decision would be on ourselves; we have the responsibility to uphold ethical standards as a basic human decency and to offer a new and fresh perspective on the table. Promoting mutual respect and personal integrity in the art community.

Additionally, concerns about fairness also arise. It is unfair for the human-made art to be judged against the one created by AI. That’s why having judges experts in the field of art is vital. It could have been prevented by the organizers in the early stage of the art competition by taking some time to invite different experts in the said field.

AI art-winning competitions made us rethink what literally an art is. Art, after all, is subjective and just like what they’re always saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” It could’ve been done better in the future by separating AI-generated arts from the traditional art competitions in order to maintain fairness and for the integrity of the artistic expressions of humans.
