📝 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿:

• Annual Precipitation was identified as the most important climate factor shaping the geographical distribution of 𝘕𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴.

• Wallacea and New Guinea are suggested as the likely geographical centers of origin, followed by expansion into the Sundaic region, the Philippines, and Indochina.

• The MaxEnt model was demonstrated to have excellent predictive performance for the distribution of 𝘕. 𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴, based on high AUC and TSS values.

• A continuous migration and expansion toward higher latitudes are expected under future warming scenarios, although suitable habitat ranges are projected to contract in low-latitude regions.

• The Sustainable Development Pathway (SSP1-2.6) was identified as the most favorable future climate scenario for the persistence and development of 𝘕. 𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴.

• Integrated in situ and ex situ conservation strategies were proposed to safeguard the wild germplasm resources of 𝘕. 𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴 and promote its sustainable development.

The Capacity Development for Early Career Researchers (CareeR) Mentoring Program 2025, implemented by the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), successfully concluded on 9 December 2025. The program aimed to strengthen the research and publication capacity of early-career scholars through structured mentoring in scientific writing, research design, and manuscript development.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭
Throughout the mentoring period, participants received guidance on research conceptualization, methodological refinement, and preparation of manuscripts for publication. The program was supported by the BioComp Laboratory and the MAHFA Project, which provided technical resources and an enabling research environment that facilitated the successful completion of program outputs.

𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐩𝐮𝐭
A key outcome of the program was the successful development and refinement of four (4) publishable manuscripts, which were finalized as journal-ready papers. This output reflects the effectiveness of the mentoring framework and the strong commitment of both mentors and grantees.

𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦
The CareeR Mentoring Program contributed to:
• Enhanced research capacity among early-career researchers;
• Strengthened collaboration among participating institutions;
• Increased research productivity of Caraga State University and partner institutions; and
• Promotion of a culture of scientific writing and publication excellence.

The researchers extend their sincere appreciation to the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) for its continued support in advancing the professional development of early-career researchers and strengthening the national research ecosystem.

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐭. 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠

From December 11–14, a four-day fieldwork, workshop, and field validation activity was successfully conducted at Mt. Hilong-hilong in Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte. This immersive activity focused on enhancing skills in floristic research, biodiversity assessment, and proper species documentation through hands-on field experience.

The activity was organized by the Department of Biology, led by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗷𝗮𝗻 𝗧. 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼, in partnership with CSU-CREME. Participants were guided throughout the entire duration by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗣𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗕. 𝗣𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲𝗿 and 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗙. 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗮 from the University of Canterbury, together with 𝗠𝗿. 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗦. 𝗢𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼 of the Philippine Eagle Foundation. Their expertise provided valuable instruction on accurate documentation, identification, and validation of floristic species in a real field setting.

The four days in the field were both challenging and rewarding, offering participants the opportunity to learn directly from experienced researchers while working in a rich and dynamic environment. Beyond the technical skills gained, the activity fostered teamwork, appreciation for local biodiversity, and a deeper understanding of the importance of careful field documentation in supporting conservation efforts.

Ms. Moning is a fourth-year student from the Department of Biology, College of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Caraga State University, and a thesis advisee of Dr. Neil dela Cruz. Her poster focused on the dung beetles of Mt. Hilong-Hilong and the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in the Caraga Region.

The Department of Biology of Caraga State University participated in the 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, organized by the Philippine Coleopterists Society Inc. (PCSI). Held on December 6–7, 2025, at the University of the Immaculate Conception in Davao City, and hosted by Davao Oriental State University, the event brought together researchers, conservation practitioners, and students to advance beetle systematics, biodiversity studies, and conservation initiatives in the Philippines.

The conference featured an outstanding lineup of plenary speakers, including 𝗗𝗿. 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗗. 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮, President and co-founder of PCSI; 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻 of the National Museum of Denmark; 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗖. 𝗕𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 of the Philippine National Museum of Natural History; 𝗗𝗿. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗵 𝗩𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘃𝗮, a Philippine Odonatologist; 𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻 𝗖. 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘀𝗺𝗼𝘀 of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity; 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗖. 𝗜𝗯𝗮𝗻̃𝗲𝘇 of the Philippine Eagle Foundation; and 𝗠𝗿. 𝗝𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗣. 𝗩𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘀, PhD candidate from the Czech University of Life Sciences. Their lectures highlighted current directions in entomology, ecology, museology, and conservation science.

CSU was represented by six 4th-year BS Biology students, accompanied by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗜𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗕. 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘇, Head of the Department of Biology, Project Leader, and thesis adviser of all six presenters. The following thesis studies were presented:

🪲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲 𝗠. 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗱 – New Records of Carrion Beetles (Coleoptera, Silphidae) from Mt. Hilong-Hilong, Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte, Philippines

🪲 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗘𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗚. 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮𝘀 – Littoral Beetle Assemblages (Coleoptera) in the Coastal Areas of the Major Islands (Dinagat, Siargao and Bucas Grande) of Caraga Region, Philippines

🪲 𝗞𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝘆 𝗣. 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 – Dung Beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) of Mt. Hilong-Hilong and Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Caraga Region, with First Record of Paragymnopleurus Dung Roller of Mindanao

A major highlight for CSU was the achievement of 𝗞𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝘆 𝗣. 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, who won 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 in the 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, receiving ₱2,000, a token, and a certificate.

These research outputs form part of the continuing collaboration between Caraga State University and the Hokkaido University Museum in Japan, supported by the Nagao Natural Environment Foundation (NEF). This partnership strengthens regional biodiversity research, promotes international academic exchange, and provides robust training opportunities for CSU’s young researchers.
