One of the ways children develop judgment is by actually getting opportunities to use it.

When adults make every decision, solve every problem, and constantly tell children exactly what to do, kids may become very good at following instructions, but that is different from learning how to think through a choice for themselves.

Decision-making involves skills like weighing options, anticipating consequences, considering other people, tolerating mistakes, and adjusting when something does not work. Those skills develop through experience and practice, not simply through being told the “right” answer.

That does not mean children should be in charge of everything. They still need boundaries, guidance, and developmentally appropriate limits. But within those limits, we can give them meaningful choices and invite them into the thinking process.

“What do you think would happen if…?”
“What are your options here?”
“How could we solve this?”
“What might you do differently next time?”

Sometimes letting children make a small mistake while the stakes are low teaches far more than preventing every mistake for them.

The long-term goal is not simply a child who does what they are told, it is a person who can eventually make thoughtful decisions even when no one is standing beside them telling them what to do.
