Continuing this strong performance, 𝙍𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙚 𝙇. 𝙉𝙖𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙖 𝙅𝙧. (a BSECE recent graduate) secured 3rd Place in the College SIBOL Category during the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) 2026, held in Manila, Philippines.

The DOST NICE is one of the country’s premier platforms for innovation, gathering the most outstanding inventors, researchers, and student innovators nationwide. It serves as a venue to showcase groundbreaking technologies, promote a culture of creativity and problem-solving, and support the commercialization of Filipino innovations that address real-world challenges across various sectors.

Together with teammate Jay Marie M. Bangga and under the guidance of their Thesis Adviser Engr. Ronieto Mendoza, their innovation, “Automatic Rice Seed Varietal Purity Testing Machine using AI and Automation,” highlights the role of intelligent systems in modernizing agricultural processes. By integrating artificial intelligence and automation, the system enables faster and more accurate seed purity testing through image analysis and automated classification, reducing human error and improving efficiency.

This achievement reinforces Caraga State University’s position as a leading hub for student-driven innovation in Mindanao, with research solutions that address real-world challenges and contribute to sustainable development.

For the past three Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE), the Department of Electronics Engineering (DECE) of Caraga State University has consistently emerged as a champion in the Mindanao leg, representing the region at the national stage as one of the Top 5 finalists—demonstrating sustained excellence in innovation and research.

In celebration of National Innovation Month, Caraga State University spotlights student researchers Jay Marie M. Bangga and Ronie L. Naquila Jr., who will represent Mindanao in the College Sibol Category of the 2026 National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE), under the guidance of their adviser Ronieto Mendoza.

Their innovation, “Automatic Rice Seed Varietal Purity Testing Machine using AI and Automation,” introduces a faster and more accurate approach to rice seed quality assessment. By integrating artificial intelligence and automation, the system streamlines varietal purity testing through image analysis and automated classification, reducing human error and improving efficiency.

Traditionally dependent on manual and expert-driven processes, seed purity testing can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. The team’s solution offers a smarter alternative, enabling reliable identification of high-quality seeds—critical for improving crop yield and ensuring consistency in rice production.

The innovation supports agricultural development by assisting farmers, seed producers, and research institutions in maintaining seed quality. It also aligns with Sustainable Development Goals on Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), promoting sustainable and technology-driven farming practices.

As Caraga continues to emerge as a hub for innovation, these young researchers highlight the role of student-led solutions in addressing real-world challenges and advancing the future of agriculture.
