Accurate soil testing is the cornerstone of sustainable fertilizer management, improved crop productivity, and responsible soil stewardship. To truly benefit the community, soil testing systems must be farmer-centered, locally relevant, and responsive to the diverse soil conditions and evolving challenges faced across the Philippines. Strengthening the country's soil testing framework is therefore essential to delivering reliable fertilizer recommendations and supporting more informed, science-based farm management decisions.

Our latest publication provides technical and policy insights into the Philippine soil testing system, identifying key gaps and offering recommendations to strengthen soil fertility assessment, fertilizer recommendation systems, and evidence-based agricultural decision-making.

Published in the Soil Science journal under the Springer Nature umbrella, this comprehensive review examines the complex interactions between phosphorus (P) and copper (Cu) in soil systems. It explores how P availability influences Cu dynamics, how Cu affects P behavior, and the broader implications for plant nutrition and soil health.

The paper identifies critical research gaps and proposes pathways for advancing nutrient management strategies in agricultural soils. By synthesizing current evidence with emerging insights, it provides valuable guidance for researchers, agronomists, and policymakers working toward sustainable soil fertility management and resilient crop production. The article also discussed the much needed evolution of soil testing to take into account the existing nutrient interaction.

The man, who grew up in remote indigenous farming communities in Agusan del Sur, is now the research program manager for soil and land management at Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).
