โ€ŽThe Man Who Chose His Country
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe sound of cameras clicking filled the airport, families waited for their loved ones, as soldiers stood watch, while reporters anticipated the arrival of a man who had been away from his homeland for years, but one question lingered:why would a man return to a country where death awaited him?
โ€Ž
โ€ŽFor many Filipinos today, Ninoy Aquino Day may seem like nothing more than just a day off from School, and work, but behind the holiday lies the courage, sacrifice and a man's willingness to risk everything for his country.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽNinoy Aquino was a prominent adversary of the government of Ferdinand Marcos Sr.. After spending years being exiled in the United States, he chose to return to the Philippines on August 21, 1983, he knew that his return could put his life in danger, but he believed that his country needed him.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽHis journey ended at the Manila International Airport, where he was assassinated shortly after arriving. The airport would later be renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport to honor him.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽBut his death did not silence the Filipino people, Instead it became a spark that awakened a nation. Protestors rose, opposition to the Marcos government grew and became stronger. Years later the growing movement led to the 1986 Power People Revolution.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽNinoy's story is not remembered only because he was a politician who died. It is because of the choice he had to make before his death. Yet despite the risk, he still chose to return to the country he called home.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽYet Ninoy Aquino's legacy is not only in history books, it continues to live on in every Filipino who chooses to speak the truth and stand for what is right.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽNinoy Aquino day was officially recognized through Republic Act No. 9256, which declared August 21 as Ninoy Aquino Day, a special non-working holiday. Behind the day off from school and work lies the reminder of Ninoy Aquino's sacrifice.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽNinoy Aquino once said โ€œThe Filipinos is worth dying forโ€ showing his love for Philippines and Filipinos.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽDecades later, his words continue to remind Filipinos that freedom isn't just simply received, it's something that must be valued and protected.

โ€ŽSa pagtatapos ng seremonya, nagbigay ng panghuling pagtataya ang Special Program in Journalism Coordinator at The Pillar School Paper Adviser, Maโ€™am Sarah Jacoba-Sanoy na ipinaliwanag ang pamantayan sa pagpili ng mga kwalipikadong kalahok para sa Division School-Based Press Conference.
