Antique Vocational School (AVS) overcame an early 10-point deficit and unleashed a decisive fourth-quarter surge to defeat Southern Bugasong National High School (SBNHS), 85โ78, in the Basketball Boys 5x5 Finals of the Municipal Meet on August 16.
The AVS team relied on the 18-point performances of Jay R. Dave Ostan and John Wendelle Granada, while Shian Lie Orantes added 12 points through aggressive drives and layups.
The SBNHS team, however, controlled much of the early game, led by Jade Iver Magbanuaโs 20 points, Zaijan Acupanโs 13, and Edrian Bostonโs 14.
The game was also marked by a series of injuries on both sides, with several players requiring assistance and stretchers as the physical contest intensified.
โThe early 6-0 run by SBNHS pressured AVS, as Acupan consistently applied aggressive pressure to AVS' defense, preventing the AVSian ballers from finding easy scoring opportunities.
โAs compensation from the early setback, AVS' Ostan shot in 3 points to clutch, helping the team erase the deficit and finish the period tied at 15โ15.
The second quarter belonged to SBNHS as Magbanua knocked down shots from the three-point line, while Boston capitalized on fast-break opportunities to disrupt AVSโs rhythm.
SBNHS pulled away to a 39โ29 lead at halftime.
The third quarter brought another twist as SBNHSโs injury woes began to mount.
Tornos, who had suffered a hand injury in the opening quarter, returned to the game, but Magbanua later went down with an ankle injury.
The AVSian team took advantage of the depleted SBNHS lineup and mounted a strong comeback, trimming the deficit to just one point, 49โ48.
The turning point came in the fourth quarter as Granada, AVSโ point guard, delivered crucial baskets, while Ostan sank back-to-back three-pointers and attacked the basket with aggressive drives.
Magbanua briefly returned and immediately converted a three-pointer, but was forced to leave the court again shortly afterward.
AVS also suffered a setback when Ostan had to rest after a hard fall on a blocked shot.
โWith last 3 minutes remaining in the game, both Acupan and Magbanua returned in a last-ditch effort to clutch the game for SBNHSโ favor.
However, Carpio's banked penalty shots was the nail in the coffin for SBNHS, 85-78.
โThe game was very intense. Both sides gave their all. I think AVS won because of their determination, heart, and discipline during training,โ AVS coach Mark Anthony Senobio said in a post-game interview.
Ostan, who led the team to victory, said both teams displayed strong defense and described the game as a close and intense battle.
With the victory, AVS claimed the municipal basketball championship and earned the right to represent Bugasong in the upcoming Cluster Meet in Valderrama.
