The maya, commonly referring to the Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) in many Philippine cities, can use dust as part of its natural body care. Instead of bathing in water, these small birds may crouch on dry soil, sand, or loose dust and flap, roll, wiggle, and shake their bodies. ๐ฆ๐จ
It might look like the bird is making itself dirty, but there's actually a reason behind it!
Dust particles can move between the feathers and may help remove excess oil, loosen dirt and debris, and reduce tiny external parasites such as mites.
๐ชถ Fun Fact: Birds depend on their feathers for flying, insulation, protection, waterproofing, and temperature control. That's why keeping their feathers in good condition is important for their survival!
