𝑨𝑼𝑮𝑼𝑺𝑻 27, 2026 | North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) Bislig Campus participated in the 2026 Caraga Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) held at Robinsons Place Butuan.

The event featured the Grand Opening, Press Conference, and Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing, bringing together representatives from government agencies, academic institutions, and other partner organizations across the Caraga Region.

NEMSU was also represented by NEMSU President III Nemesio G. Loayon, PhD, and Vice President for Research, Innovation and Extension Rolly G. Salvaleon, PhD, who joined the activities as part of the university’s participation in the regional celebration.

Representing NEMSU Bislig Campus were Arnel J. Valenciano, Program Head of the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, and Louella Jane B. Gabato, University Research Associate II. Their participation allowed the campus to connect with partner institutions and take part in discussions and activities focused on science, technology, research, and innovation.

This year’s Caraga RSTW carries the theme, “Innovations and Solutions for Food Security, Sustainable Energy, and Resilience.” The celebration highlights the importance of science, technology, and innovation in addressing community needs and supporting development in the region.

NEMSU Bislig continues to take part in regional activities that create opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and partnerships in support of research, innovation, and community development.

𝑵𝑬𝑴𝑺𝑼 𝑩𝒊𝒔𝒍𝒊𝒈 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒚 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑭𝒀 2027 𝑭𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈

AUGUST 24–25, 2026 | Through a two day virtual technical review via Zoom, faculty members of North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) Bislig Campus presented their proposed research projects for FY 2027 Funding under the theme, “Advancing Quality Research. Strengthening Innovation. Transforming Communities.”

The virtual session brought researchers and technical experts together for a focused exchange on research ideas, approaches, and expected contributions. The Research and Innovation Office facilitated the technical review in Room 4, coordinating the presentation of research proposals and the discussions between the research proponents and the invited technical panel members. This setup provided a structured space for the researchers to present their proposed studies, receive expert observations, and further refine their research questions, methodologies, scope, and anticipated outputs.

The technical review in Room 4 was enriched by the expertise of Dr. Arnold C. Alguno, Research Management Director and Professor of Mindanao State University, Iligan Institute of Technology, and Engr. Rose May Igdon Vallinas, Senior Environmental Management Specialist and Faculty of DENR Region X and Xavier University. Their technical perspectives encouraged the research proponents to look more closely at the strength of their research designs and the relevance of their proposed outputs.

Participating in NEMSU Bislig Campus were Rvglen M. Cubarol, Lovella C. De Ramos, Virgilio T. Ombao, Jr., Hendon Lamanilao, Anastacio Pantaleon, Melchora Baculinao, and Charry Mae S. Numeron, who presented their respective research proposals and engaged with the panel during the technical discussions.

The activity highlights an important stage in the research process, where ideas are examined before they move toward implementation. These exchanges help shape proposals into studies that are not only academically sound but also relevant to the fields and communities they seek to serve.

The technical review also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4, SDG 9 and SDG 17 through the sharing of expertise and collaboration among researchers, technical reviewers, and academic institutions.

NEMSU Bislig congratulates the faculty researchers who presented their proposals and extends its appreciation to the technical panel members, the Research and Innovation Office, and everyone who contributed to the organization and conduct of the virtual technical review. Every question raised, recommendation shared, and research idea refined forms part of the process of building stronger studies and producing knowledge that can inform practice, support communities, and contribute to development.

AUGUST 20, 2026 | BISLIG CITY, SURIGAO DEL SUR — The NEMSU Bislig Research Team joined the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) of the Barcelona–Bongan–Lawigan–Valencia Protected Landscape and Seascape (BARBOLAVA PLAS) to present its study Resource Mapping and Biodiversity Assessment in Barangays Labisma and Lawigan, Bislig City.

Funded by the LGU of Bislig City, the study will map and assess mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and associated reef fish, comparing areas within and outside existing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

The study aims to provide baseline scientific information to support MPA management, coastal conservation, and the strengthening of the LGU’s Coastal and Marine Zonation Plan.

NEMSU Bislig Research extends its sincere gratitude to the DENR–CENRO Bislig, headed by CENR Officer Romel B. Arbolonio, and the entire DENR–CENRO team for their valuable time, guidance, and support during the presentation and discussion of the proposed study.

The initiative contributes to SDG 14 – Life Below Water, supporting the conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal resources, and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration among NEMSU, DENR–CENRO, PAMB, and the LGU of Bislig City.

NEMSU Bislig extends its heartfelt gratitude to the City Government of Bislig for its continued support and partnership in exploring the possible return of commercial flights to the city.

The proposed feasibility and sustainability study is a step toward understanding the needs and opportunities for restoring air connectivity in Bislig. Through continued collaboration, NEMSU and the City Government of Bislig aim to improve connectivity and open more opportunities for tourism, business, and local development.

The North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) – Bislig Campus, together with the NEMSU Lianga Campus and the City Government of Bislig Planning Office, held a coordination meeting on August 12, 2026 for the research project titled “Resource Mapping and Biodiversity Assessment Within and Outside Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) of Brgy. Caguyao and Brgy. Tumanan, Bislig, Surigao del Sur.” The meeting brought together the research teams and local planning representatives to discuss the project, coordinate the planned activities, and align the next steps for its implementation.

Through this collaborative effort, the University and the local government aim to generate relevant and evidence-based information that can support informed planning, sustainable coastal resource management, and community development in Bislig City.

NEMSU Bislig, together with its research partners and the local government, continues to work closely in making research more useful to the community. The meeting provided an opportunity to share ideas, discuss local concerns, and make sure that the coastal research assessment is aligned with the needs of Bislig City.

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 | The NEMSU-Bislig Campus Research and Innovation Office proudly congratulates BSME alumni Charvitt M. Magayon, Ianvic M. Poyos, Allan B. Jomoc Jr., and Bendon Dreyx C. Leonor, together with Engr. Alberto E. Lastimado Jr., Faculty Lead, College of Engineering and Technology, for the successful publication of their research article entitled “Assessment of Occupational Safety and Health Compliance among the Ice Industry of Bislig City, Philippines” in WORK: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment & Rehabilitation, a Scopus Q2-indexed international journal.

The study examines the level of occupational safety and health compliance, hazard awareness, and safety practices among ice manufacturing facilities in Bislig City. Its findings provide insights that may help strengthen workplace safety efforts in local industries.

This achievement reflects the dedication of NEMSU-Bislig researchers in producing relevant studies that respond to community and industry needs while sharing local research in the international academic community.

As part of its efforts to preserve local culture and history, the North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) – Bislig Campus conducted a two-day institutional visit on August 3–4, 2026, in Tagum City and Davao City for the research program “Paghandum sa Kabilin: Cultural Heritage Documentation and Assessment.”

The activity was joined by the NEMSU Bislig Campus Director, faculty researchers, project and study leaders, and study members involved in the program. Representatives from the City Government of Bislig also took part in the activity, particularly Mr. Demetrio A. Diga, Jr., Project Development Officer II of the City Planning and Development Office, and Mr. Michael D. Caber, Public Utilities Regulations Officer I and Focal Person for Culture and Arts. Their participation provided valuable inputs and helped strengthen the connection between the University’s research efforts and the city’s cultural heritage initiatives.

During the visit, the participants went to the Tagum City Historical and Cultural Center and conducted a benchmarking activity at the National Museum of the Philippines – Davao. The experience allowed the team to learn more about heritage documentation, museum practices, and ways of preserving and promoting cultural resources.

The activity served as a preparation for the implementation of the “Paghandum sa Kabilin” research program in Bislig City. The knowledge and lessons gained from the visits will help support the documentation and assessment of the city’s cultural heritage and contribute to future cultural mapping activities.

NEMSU expresses its appreciation to University President Dr. Nemesio Loayon for his continued support for research and innovation. The University also recognizes Dr. Rolly Salvaleon, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension, for supporting initiatives that enhance the skills and experiences of faculty researchers.

Through activities like this, NEMSU continues to promote research, preserve cultural heritage, and work with communities in celebrating the history and identity of Bislig City.

NEMSU Bislig Research Program Team conducted a coordination meeting with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) to discuss the implementation of “Paghandum sa Kabilin: Cultural Heritage Documentation and Assessment.”

The meeting was attended by representatives from NCIP Bislig Community Service Center , Mr. Jonard B. Benito, CAO I, and Mr. Renato Anora, AAI, together with Mr. Rvglen M. Cubarol, Research Program Leader; Mr. Virgilio Ombao, Ms. Ginalyn P. Estose, and Ms. Edralyn S. Hofeliña, Project Leaders; and the Research Assistants.

The discussion focused on the research scope, FPIC requirements, cultural protocols, implementation timeline, and coordination with Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs/IPs). Through this partnership, NEMSU Bislig continues to strengthen its commitment to the responsible documentation, preservation, and promotion of the cultural heritage of Bislig City while fostering inclusive collaboration with Indigenous communities and partner institutions.
