The DLSU Institute of Biological Control (IoBC) conducted a Farmer’s Training on the use of Crop Zhield, a Philippine natural Zeolite-based particle film technology, for cacao pest management in Echague, Isabela, on August 27–28.

The training was facilitated by Dr. Divina Amalin and Mr. Kris Lord T. Santos, and featured hands-on sessions on field monitoring protocols for insect pests and diseases of cacao.

As part of the training, farmers and students were also introduced to the preparation of Crop Zhield, then its application on cacao pods and seedlings.

The Institute of Biological Control invites you to attend the hybrid seminar on "Chemical Ecology Research at the New Zealand Bioeconomy Science Institute" with Dr. Flore Mas, a Science Team Leader of Sensory Ecology & Behaviour, as our speaker.

This seminar will be held on August 20, 2026 at 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM.

Register at: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/eNPdmZUXSsK_Dz1KNYrPpw

About the speaker:

“[Dr. Flore Mas is] an evolutionary and behavioural ecologist with a speciality in chemical ecology, and graduated with degrees from universities in Canada, France and Switzerland. [She is] passionate about the interactions between organisms (plant-insects-microbes) and eavesdropping on their communication in order to design naturally-based ecological pest management solutions. Combining tools of analytical chemistry with electrophysiology and behavioural assays, [she works] in a team to identify bioactive volatile compounds that can be developed into lures for pest management and surveillance, or new sensors.”

The Institute of Biological Control attended the 58th PMCP Anniversary and Annual Scientific Conference last July 28-30, 2026, sharing their research on various topics.

Among the oral presenters, Mr. Kris Lord T. Santos presented his research entitled “Field Evaluation of the S*x Pheromone of the Sweetpotato Weevil (𝘊𝘺𝘭𝘢𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘴 (Fabricius)) in the Philippines.” Mr. Shad Natthew S. Arce also shared his study on the “First Record of Bondar’s Nesting Whitefly, (𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘺𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘪) Peracchi (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), on Sweet Potato in the Philippines,” highlighting new distribution findings.

Alongside them, Ms. Monica F. Fronda discussed her research entitled “𝘐𝘯 𝘝𝘪𝘵𝘳𝘰 Evaluation of the Antifungal Activity of 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢 Against 𝘍𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮 Isolated from Sweetpotato.” Ms. Ma. Kimberly Suministrado, on the other hand, presented her research entitled “Understanding the Gut Microbiota of Green Leafhopper using 16s Metabarcoding Analysis.” Additionally, “Pupae and Exit Holes as Predictors of Parasitization by 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢 Larvae in 𝘈𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘴 Colonies” was discussed by Dr. Billy Joel M. Almarinez

During the poster presentation sessions, “Elucidating the combined effects of prey density and feeding frequency on the feeding ecology of 𝘛𝘰𝘹𝘰𝘳𝘩𝘺𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴 (Wiede-mann, 1819) under laboratory conditions” was presented by Dale Anthony L. To, while Ms. Ma. Christine G. Ortiguero shared her study entitled “Semi-field Assessment of Oviposition Preference of 𝘛𝘰𝘹𝘰𝘳𝘩𝘺𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 sp.
