In celebration of National Reading Month, Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School launched a month-long series of activities aimed at nurturing a culture of reading, enhancing literacy skills, and inspiring every learner to develop a genuine love for books. The school community—teachers, learners, parents, and staff—enthusiastically took part in both the opening/kickoff and the culminating events, making the celebration meaningful and successful.
Opening Program and Kickoff Activities
The celebration began with a vibrant Opening Program and Kickoff Ceremony held at the school grounds. The event opened with a prayer and the singing of the national anthem, followed by a warm welcome message from the school head, who emphasized the importance of reading as a foundation of learning and lifelong success.
A lively Readers’ Walk Parade showcased students carrying their favorite books while marching around the campus. This activity aimed to spark excitement and raise awareness about the significance of reading month. Teachers led the students, encouraging them to proudly display their chosen titles.
To further ignite interest, selected pupils presented a Readers’ Pledge, promising to read daily and to treat books with care. The kickoff also featured a short storytelling performance from a teacher-librarian, demonstrating expressive reading and simple comprehension strategies that students could follow.
Month-long Reading Activities
Throughout the month, various engaging literacy activities were implemented across all grade levels. These included:
DEAR Time (Drop Everything and Read) – Students paused their daily routines for a few minutes each day to read independently. This helped build reading stamina and develop a habit of daily reading.
Storytelling Sessions – Teachers, parents, and invited guests conducted storytelling hours featuring local and foreign stories. Interactive questioning improved pupils’ listening and comprehension skills.
Reading Buddies Program – Upper-grade pupils were paired with early readers to assist and motivate them through shared reading sessions.
These activities enriched learners’ reading experiences and strengthened their skills in vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.
Culminating Activity and Closing Program
The celebration concluded with a meaningful Closing Program, where learners and teachers gathered to honor the achievements of the month-long reading journey.
in DEAR Time and other literacy tasks. Teachers also shared reflections on how the activities helped improve learners’ reading confidence.
The closing program ended with a collective Readers’ Commitment, reaffirming the school’s dedication to promoting literacy not only in November but throughout the entire school year.I
