The panel of evaluators was led by 𝐃𝐫. 𝐓𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐃. 𝐑𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬 𝐉𝐫. (Chairman) and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐒. 𝐏𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐚 from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, together with 𝐃𝐫. 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐒. On December 9, BISU was recognized by the Department of Science and Technology National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) for achieving the 3𝙧𝙙 𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙭 𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙍𝘿𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 (𝙃𝙀𝙄𝙨) 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 2024, in this year’s DOST-NRCP RDLead Conference and Year-End Assembly held at the Century Park Hotel, in Malate, City of Manila.

BISU’s winning project, “𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙤𝙝𝙤𝙡 𝙄𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙣 𝙏𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘽𝙞𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩," was spearheaded by project lead Dr. Jesrelljane A. Amper, together with project coordinators from BISU campuses: Mr. Christian S. Candontol, Dr. Margie V. Avenido, Ms. Kathlyn L. Quion, Dr. Josephine B. Nalzaro, Ms. Katrine Mae Mante, and Dr. Evangeline Lumantas, research assistant Jhon Eric I. Antone, and RD Leader Dr. Esperanza Maribel G. Agoo. The project was implemented from December 1, 2021, to November 30, 2022.

The initiative conducted various activities, including Biodiversity Assessment Training and Graduate Student Mentorship, Policy Brief Workshops, Training on Research Management, and Training on Scientific Writing, Review, and Publication. These efforts significantly strengthened BISU’s research capacity and paved the way for an enhanced and increased number of approved external project grants.

DOST-NRCP holds its RDLead Conference and Year-End Assembly annually, participated by RDLeaders, researchers, officials, and staff across the country, to showcase success stories of the different programs implemented by the council and recognize state universities and colleges (SUCs) and other external partners with exemplary performances in research and development.

The collaborative engagement activities, collective efforts, and support of the entire BISU community embodying the spirit of BISU One made BISU win this award.

Above all, this milestone was possible under the leadership of our University President Dr. Anthony M. Penaso, with the support of former Vice President for Research, Dr. Zina D. Sayson; Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension, Dr. Ivy Corazon A. Mangaya-ay; former Campus Director of BISU-Candijay, Dr. Proceso M. Castil; current Campus Director of BISU-Candijay, Dr. Luzminda G. Machete; Campus Directors of other campuses; campus research directors.

The award is a testament to the unwavering dedication, collaboration, and commitment of the BISU community to excellence in research and innovation, and highlights the collective effort of its faculty, researchers, and leaders in fostering a culture of academic growth and meaningful contributions to biodiversity research and development.

BISU and DLSU-Manila Strengthen Research Ties: Exploring New Opportunities in Coffee, Cacao, and Agricultural Innovation

The Bohol Island State University (BISU) has been actively collaborating with De La Salle University (DLSU)-Manila since 2022 under the leadership of Dr. Maribel Esperanza G. Agoo through the DOST-NRCP RD Lead Program. This partnership has resulted in notable achievements, such as externally funded research proposals, mentorship programs for budding researchers, and expanded MOUs with DLSU colleges.

Key projects include in-depth studies on BISU’s Adlay and Purple Yam Project, utilizing DLSU’s advanced laboratories for starch content analysis. The collaboration has also opened new doors, particularly in coffee and cacao research, spearheaded by DLSU’s Chemistry Department faculty —Dr. Mariafe Navarro-Calingacion, Dr. Aldrin Bonto, Dr. Raymond S. Malabed, and Dr. Joan Candice Ondevilla.

In line with the University’s mission to undertake research and provide an extension for the sustainable development of Bohol and the country, Bohol Island State University - Bilar Campus Research, Innovation, and Extension Unit successfully conducted its RIE Colloquium 2024 last June 18-20, 2024 with the theme “Cultivating Sustainability: Connecting Research and Action for a Flourishing World”.

The colloquium served as an avenue for the participants to showcase their research findings and engage in scholarly discussions. It also allows faculty researchers to present their research/project proposals possible for funding. Congratulations to Ms. Jessa C. Girasol with her Paper titled "In Vitro Micropropagation of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) as Influenced by the Application of Plant Growth Regulators" for winning the Best Paper across all strands and to all the participants who actively presented their papers.

Our salute and warm gratitude to the panel of evaluators, Dr. Ana Marquiza M. Quilicot, Dr. Deejay Maranguit-Lumanao, and Prof. Nelson G. Cainghog, for sharing their expertise in enriching the participants’ knowledge in research. We look forward to meeting you again soon.
