11 March 2024, Tinagapan Ground, Besao, Mountain Province. After the flag ceremony, Mr. Alex B. Sildon, coach cm adviser of the Besao National High School Sports Club – Combative Sports Guild presents to the Besao NHS family, the participants in the recently concluded Mountain Province Athletic Meet held from March 07 to 10, 2024 in Bontoc, Mountain Province.
Learners who wrestled their way to victory are Brendon Loyaona, Grade 12, who won gold just like in the previous year’s athletic meet. Loyaona jokingly expressed that “our opponent in the championship match was strong but we are much stronger that is why we won gold.” Another wrestler, Allen Dave D. Ibatuan, Grade 11, mentioned that his opponent was much bigger, but he was fortunate that he was still able to obtain gold. Other wrestlers are Noree Lee Aligo, Grade 8, Byrne Loyaona, also in Grade 8, Rüffä Mäë D. Pündö, Grade 9, and Mia Buminaang who got silver medals. Pingz Lloyd Mejia, Grade 12, expressed that despite his injury, he is still happy that he was able to get a bronze medal. Sarah Geronimo, Grade 9 expressed that the athletic meet has provided an avenue for her to grow and do better in the succeeding years.
Aside from wrestling, Besao NHS athletes also participated in other combative sports and equally proved their prowess in their events. In Wushu, Frank Lozano, Grade 8, Joel Maguli Magang - an , Grade 10 and Junora Gacusan, Grade 11 brought home gold medals while KC Ruth G. Dalang , and R-lhaye Dulag, both in Grade 8 won bronze medals.
In boxing, Joeffran Porter, Grade 11 expressed that all their efforts in training paid off as he was able to grab gold as well. Porter challenged his co-boxing athlete, Khenjie Cawatig, Grade 8, to further his training and maintain discipline and his efforts will pay off as well. In a post of one of the i-Besao boxing enthusiasts, he was ecstatic that Besao was able to get gold this year.
Meanwhile, Samantha Jade Dokey, Grade 10, and a lawn tennis player since her elementary, run and swung her victory with her partner winning gold in Lawn Tennis - Doubles. She expressed that continuity and a little bit of luck and much hard work, and prayers are keys to an individual’s success. Another Grade 10 athlete, Heizany Sultian , brought home gold from her event in gymnastics. Finally, Paul Naoy, Grade 11, proved that brains and not only brawn find glory in the athletic meet as he placed fourth in Chess. Poal L. Naoy is also a member of the Besao Chess Team which grabbed gold in Blitz Team Event and silver in Standard Chess.
In ending, Sildon expressed his gratitude to the Besao National High School Supreme Secondary Learners Government for providing funding in support of the athletes. He also acknowledged all others who provided support to the athletes, i.e., Besao MLGU, Besao District Office, SPTA, Faculty and Staff and other stakeholders. Consequently, Besao NHS will contribute eight (8) athletes to Team Mountain Province in the upcoming CARAA which will be held in Apayao.
The Besao NHS Family is truly proud as these athletes brought laurels of victory to the crown of the school.
