𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬

The OBBRACU Head, Dr. Arlene L. Tabaquero, served as a Resource Speaker at Santiago City National High School (SCNHS) in Santiago City, Isabela on September 15, 2024. She delivered a lecture to 50 STEM students and teachers which focused on the fundamentals of research writing and presentation, experimental methodologies and laboratory protocols. The activity was part of the SCNHS’ activity on Capability Building on Experimental Research for STEM Students and Teachers. The activity was initiated by Ms. Babylin S. Baltar, SCNH’s science coordinator.

𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

On August 16, 2024, the Head of OBBRACU, Dr. Arlene L. Tabaquero, benchmarked on the processes conducted by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) of Angeles University Foundation in Angeles, Pampanga.

The benchmarking activity included an interview with Ms. Shiela S. Cabral, the program chair of Biology and also a biosafety officer; and, a visit at AUF’s Center for Advanced Research and Innovation (CARI) by the CARI Director, Ms. Mona Liza B. Lacson. Planning of the activities by the OBBRACU, particularly on the review processes of scientific protocols, and identifying experts who can help in the trainings/workshops to be conducted by the OBBRACU on biosafety and biosecurity measures are among the take aways in the benchmarking activity.

𝐎𝐁𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐔 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟑𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐏𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐒 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞

On August 15-16, 2024, Dr. Arlene L. Tabaquero, the head of the newly established Office of Biosafety, Biosecurity, and, Research Animal Care and Use (OBBRACU) in the university, attended the 33rd Philippine Association for Laboratory Animal Science (PALAS) Annual Scientific Conference held in Bellevue Hotel Manila, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

The conference provided an opportunity for the office head to benchmark on processes and activities which shall be implemented by the newly established office. Among the relevant topics discussed in the conference include the following: (a) Revising the Administrative Order No. 40, s. 1999: enhancing the Conduct of Scientific Procedures using Animals; (2) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee: Role in Animal Research in Institution; (3) Animal welfare and Its Relevance to the Research and Scientific Community; (4) One Health in the Practice of Laboratory Animal Biorisk Management; (5) One Health Approach in Biomedical Research: Enhancing Human Health through Collaborative Science; and (6) The Use of Invertebrate Animal Models in Neuroscience Research.

On Augut 9, 2024, Dr. Arlene L. Tabaquero, the head of the newly established Office of Biosafety, Biosecurity, and, Research Animal Care and Use (OBBRACU) in the university, visited the Region 02 DA Research and Development Regulatory Division and the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) in Tuguegarao to inquire on the requirements needed for registration of animal facility. SMU plans to put up a research animal facility which is intended for the conduct of laboratory procedures that involve the use of animals for research. Dr. Tabaquero was able to meet Dr. John Christopher Unipa, DVM, of the Research and Development Regulatory Division.
