📢 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
As part of Saint Mary’s University’s commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and promoting community-centered innovation, we share the findings of the study entitled “Development of Antimicrobial Topical Spray from Parameria laevigata (Lupiit) Stem-Bark Against Medically Selected Pathogens” conducted by BS Biology Major in Medical Biology students Maria Katrina D. Conejo and Maria Monica M. Munar under the supervision of Mrs. Cathelyn C. Mariano, LPT, MA.
🌿 Exploring Nature-Based Antimicrobial Solutions
The study investigated the potential of Parameria laevigata (Lupiit) stem-bark as a source of bioactive compounds for the development of an antimicrobial topical spray. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoids and phenolic compounds, while laboratory analyses demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and moderate inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans.
🔬 Contributing to Sustainable Healthcare Innovations
The findings highlight the potential of locally available plant resources in the development of eco-friendly antimicrobial products. By integrating traditional botanical knowledge with scientific research, the study contributes to ongoing efforts to discover sustainable alternatives for managing microbial threats and supporting public health.
Through research dissemination, Saint Mary’s University continues to foster innovation, encourage evidence-based solutions, and share scientific discoveries that can benefit both the academic community and society.

SMU Conducts Tree Inventory and Ecological Assessment of Saint Mary's University
Saint Mary’s University (SMU) – School of Health and Natural Sciences, through the Center for Natural Sciences’ PROJECT SEDES SAPIENTIAE GARDENS, successfully conducted a Tree Inventory and Assessment from March to May 2026 at the university campus. The research-based initiative aligns with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
Led by Mr. Renz Gil B. Medina and Dr. Elsa L. Cajucom, LPT, RChT, the activity involved BS Biology 1 students in identifying, locating, and analyzing campus tree species to support biodiversity modeling and conservation planning. Key processes included ocular inspection, tree-tagging, data collection, statistical analysis, and research defense.
The study produced baseline data on tree abundance, frequency, and endemism, providing inputs for proposed conservation strategies such as a digital tree monitoring system, invasive species regulation, native canopy enrichment, and a campus biodiversity management zone.
Despite challenges in data gathering due to the high number of trees, organizers reported successful completion of objectives. The results are expected to strengthen SMU’s long-term campus greening and biodiversity conservation efforts.

The St. Adjutor’s BANTAY Magat Project (Physicochemical and Biological Water Quality Analysis of the Magat River) was successfully conducted by the Center for Natural Sciences across key monitoring stations in Ambaguio, Bayombong, and Quezon.
The activity involved comprehensive field sampling and on-site analysis, including physicochemical testing and macroinvertebrate collection as bioindicators of river health. Alongside the faculty and staff of the Center for Natural Sciences, BS Biology 2 students actively participated in conducting the analysis, fostering hands-on scientific learning and environmental stewardship.
This initiative was made possible through the collaboration of the School of Health and Natural Sciences – Center for Natural Sciences, the Community Engagement and Indigenous Peoples Studies Center (CEIPSC), and the Safety and Pollution Control Office (SPCO). Their collective efforts ensured that scientific research remains aligned with environmental protection and community needs.
Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 14: Life Below Water—the project underscores the importance of science-driven action in safeguarding vital water resources.

🌏 [INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ZERO WASTE] ♻️
✨ In a world facing unprecedented environmental challenges, the transition toward a "Zero Waste" society is no longer an option—it is a necessity. At UI GreenMetric, we recognize that universities and institutions are the primary laboratories for this transformation. Through our Waste Management indicators, we continue to empower over 1,000 universities worldwide to move beyond traditional disposal methods and embrace the principles of the Circular Economy. 🏛️📈
By prioritizing Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (4R), we are not just managing trash; we are preserving resources and protecting biodiversity. From campus composting programs to specialized e-waste hubs, every action counts toward reducing the global methane emissions and plastic pollution that threaten our shared future. 🍃✨
🌱 Let’s turn the tide on waste! Today is a reminder that a sustainable future starts with a single conscious choice. Join us in building a cleaner, greener, and more responsible world for generations to come. ✨🤝
