The VSU Department of Forest Science (DFS) celebrated its 50 years through an Awards Night and Symposium held on September 23-24, 2026, at the RDE Hall, bringing together alumni, faculty, students, and partners to look back on five decades of forestry education and service.

The celebration, themed “PAGDUMDOM: Forestry’s Golden Journey in Fostering Excellence and Innovation,” recognized outstanding alumni and featured discussions on important forestry and environmental issues.

IN PHOTOS | International Workshop

An international workshop titled “Transforming Biotechnology and Agriculture: Bridging Biodiversity and Digital Innovation for Natural Sustainability” was held on August 12–13, 2026, at the Hermes Palace Hotel in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

The workshop featured Dr. Renezita S. Come as one of its keynote speakers. In her presentation, she shared her ongoing research, highlighting the importance of biodiversity assessment and ecosystem functioning in understanding forest ecosystems and advancing sustainable forest management practices.

Dr. Come was invited by Prof. Dr. Ir. Samadi, M.Sc., IPU and Dr. Cut Erika, S.TP., M.Sc., fellow University of Göttingen alumni and DAAD scholars. The occasion provided a valuable opportunity to reconnect through shared academic experiences while strengthening professional networks and fostering international collaboration.

The workshop brought together researchers, scientists, and experts from diverse disciplines to exchange knowledge, share research findings, and explore opportunities for collaboration at the intersection of biotechnology, agriculture, biodiversity, and digital innovation.

The event was organized by the Research Centre for Innovation and Feed Technology, Universitas Syiah Kuala, in collaboration with the German Alumni Association of Aceh and the Research Centre for Rural Development and Sustainable Agriculture, with support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The workshop served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary engagement, and international collaboration, highlighting the importance of innovative and science-based approaches to biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, and responsible ecosystem management.

The Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Science (FFES) successfully conducted the Online Student and Parents Onboarding for School Year 2026–2027 on August 19, 2026. The activity served as a meaningful opportunity to warmly welcome our new students, particularly the freshmen, and their parents to the FFES community. The onboarding featured informative sessions and engaging activities designed to help students and parents become more familiar with the Faculty, its programs, policies, and academic community.

The FFES extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of the onboarding program, particularly the VSU Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Science Supreme Student Council (FFES SSC), faculty members, and staff for their valuable support, dedication, and active participation.

IN PHOTOS | Project Presentation and OJT Exit Conference

Held on July 27, 2026, at the DENR CENRO San Juan, Southern Leyte, the activity featured the presentation of the PLOT-ADAPT Silago and CITIZEN SDSS projects led by Dr. Renezita S. Come, Project Lead, together with the project staff.

The activity was attended by Officer-in-Charge Engr. Nicolas C. Llido, representing CENR Officer Melecia B. Sumbeling, along with personnel of DENR CENRO San Juan; Dr. Eva Abad, Executive Director of the Southern Pacific Integrated Area Development Foundation, Inc. (SPIADFI); and six OJT students from the Visayas State University Department of Forest Science (VSU-DFS).

The project presentations were followed by an engaging discussion and exchange of ideas, insights, and recommendations on the implementation and further development of the projects. Participants actively shared their perspectives and provided valuable inputs, contributing to a meaningful and productive dialogue. The discussion highlighted opportunities to strengthen project implementation, enhance collaboration, and maximize the projects’ potential impact among partner institutions and stakeholders.

The activity concluded with an OJT Exit Conference facilitated by OJT Coordinator For. Karen O. Paña, MSc. The conference provided the six OJT students with an opportunity to reflect on and share their experiences, key learnings, and insights gained throughout their training. It also served as a meaningful venue to recognize their contributions and acknowledge the knowledge, skills, and professional experiences they acquired during their OJT.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦 | 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮

The second and final day of the Basic Mountaineering Course successfully concluded today, May 31, 2026, at the FFES-AVR. Participants continued their learning through lectures on trail management techniques and trail signs, camp management, river crossing, basic camp knots, map and compass reading, and navigation and orienteering.

To reinforce the lessons, participants took part in hands-on activities on basic camp knots and a navigation and orienteering exercise, where they applied their knowledge of map and compass reading in a practical setting.

Through the guidance of Mr. Neil Mabini and the support of the Mt. Pangasugan Trailblazers Association, Inc. (MPTAI), participants concluded the course equipped with essential mountaineering skills and a deeper appreciation for safety, responsibility, and environmental stewardship in the outdoors.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦 | 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭

The first day of the Basic Mountaineering Course was successfully conducted today, May 30, 2026, at the FFES AVR.

The session covered foundational topics in mountaineering, including physical fitness, climb objectives, planning and preparation, meal planning, equipment management, backpack loading, camp preparation, trail etiquette and hygiene, as well as Leave No Trace principles and gender and cultural sensitivity in outdoor activities.

As part of the hands-on component, participants worked in groups to develop their own climb itinerary and meal plan, applying the lessons learned in planning for safe, organized, and responsible outdoor expeditions.

Sending our warmest gratitude to Neil Mabini as our Resource Person and Mt. Pangasugan Trailblazers as our Resource Facilitators, for making this activity possible!

The activity marks the beginning of a series of training sessions aimed at strengthening outdoor skills, environmental awareness, and responsible mountaineering practices.
