From June 25 to July 3, 2026, the VSU-ViSERDAC team together with Dr. Harald Grabher conducted qualitative data collection in the project’s study site. The data collection sought to understand how households affected by Tropical Storm Agaton experienced changes in their livelihoods, resource use, assets, skills, values and daily practices.

The findings of this phase served as the basis for the project’s succeeding quantitative data collection activities.

The Social Practice Changes Following Weather Extremes: Capturing Tipping Dynamics in Domestic Resource Use and Social Metabolism (SPECTRUM) project is research collaboration between the University of Graz and Visayas State University.

Last June 24, 2026, the team welcomed Dr. Harald Grabher from the University of Graz, Austria.

Dr. Grabher will be conducting a research project titled “SPECTRUM - Social practice changes following weather extremes: Capturing tipping dynamics in domestic resource use and social metabolism”. This aims to understand how major weather events disrupt and reshape the daily lives of affected communities and how support systems can be improved to reduce risks and effective recovery. In Baybay City, the study will focus on the residents of Brgy. Kantagnos who were affected by Tropical Storm Agaton.

The day after his arrival, he met with VSU officials to discuss the collaboration and participated in the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) between the partner institutions. He also paid courtesy to the City Mayor of Baybay to discuss the research activities to be conducted in the city.

Dr. Jonathan Hubchen of the LSU AgCenter continued his field engagements with partner communities during his visit.

He visited Hilongos and Ormoc City to discuss ongoing initiatives and listen to farmers’ concerns. In Hilongos, he met with farm association leaders to better understand their experiences and challenges in farming. Afterwards, he was able to visit rice farms in Brgy. Tabunok.

In Ormoc City, he first met with the City Agriculture Department before proceeding to Tempesto Integrated Farm in Brgy. Monterico where he observed local practices and ongoing efforts. The group also visited Lake Danao, which Dr. Hubchen had previously visited during his time as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer.

Capping off his visit, he held a closing meeting with the ViSERDAC team to discuss ways forward and potential research collaborations.

Dr. Jonathan Hubchen of the LSU AgCenter continues his engagements at Visayas State University.

On June 17, he met with the Office of the Vice President for Administration and Finance (OVPAF) staff for a short discussion on LSU’s AgCenter management, providing insights into its operations.

On June 18, he also met with graduating Economics and Agricultural Economics students to discuss opportunities for graduate studies at LSU, sharing information on academic programs and opportunity for further studies.

These activities are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration, knowledge exchange, and academic linkages between LSU and VSU.

Dr. Jonathan Hubchen of the LSU AgCenter continues to engage with key partners during his visit to the Visayas State University.

On Tuesday, June 16, he visited the Philippine Root Crop Research and Training Center (PhilRootcrops), where he met with Director Prof. Marlon Tambis to discuss possible research collaboration. He also visited the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center VIII (ATI-RTC VIII) and met with Regional Director Ms. Hazel Grace Taganas, one of the project partners.

At ATI-RTC VIII, Dr. Hubchen delivered a lecture during one of the ongoing trainings, while Dr. Moises Neil Seriño shared the research outputs from his LSU fellowship.

These activities are part of strengthening collaboration among partner institutions under the project.

We were delighted to welcome 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗯𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻 from the Louisiana State University (LSU) AgCenter to the Visayas State University last Monday, June 15, 2026.

Dr. Hubchen paid a courtesy call to our University President, Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes together with Dr. Moises Neil V. Seriño, VP for Administration and Finance, and Dr. Jade Dhapnee Z. Compendio, Director of the International Affairs and Relations Office.

During his stay, Dr. Hubchen will be working closely with VSU under the USDA-funded project focused on strengthening climate resilience among Philippine rice farmers. Activities include sharing LSU best practices, reviewing VSU’s technology transfer efforts, and discussing how initiatives from ViSERDAC have helped fast-track project implementation.

In the evening, the ViSERDAC team hosted a simple welcome dinner. An opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and look ahead to meaningful and impactful collaboration.
