𝗔𝗚𝗥𝗜𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗦𝗨𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬!

What began as a course she never imagined would define her future has become a journey of growth, purpose, and agripreneurship.

The VSU 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 proudly congratulates 𝗝𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗹 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗢𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀, a 2026 graduate of the 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 program, for being recognized as a 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗲!

As the daughter of farmers, Jocel grew up seeing the realities and difficulties of farm life. She once dreamed of becoming a Civil Engineer and initially entered Agribusiness thinking it would mainly revolve around business and management. But as she progressed through the program, Agribusiness gradually reshaped the way she understood agriculture—and eventually, the way she envisioned her future.

A turning point came during her fourth year, when actual farm immersion allowed her to experience agriculture beyond the classroom. What she once associated mainly with hardship became an industry she could see differently: one filled with opportunities, innovation, and possibilities for young people. Along the way, mentors also encouraged her to view farming not only as a profession, but as a potential business opportunity.

Agribusiness also shaped Jocel beyond technical knowledge. By attending trainings, seminars, and workshops while completing her studies, she developed the confidence to communicate, build networks, share ideas, and seize opportunities. These experiences became stepping stones toward becoming an agripreneur and eventually joining the Young Farmers Challenge.

From these experiences grew 𝙎𝙊𝙄𝙇𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, her emerging agribusiness venture focused on transforming biodegradable waste into valuable agricultural inputs through vermicomposting. The venture currently produces vermicast and vermi-tea, with plans to develop other sustainable farm inputs.

Today, Jocel’s recognition as a Young Farmers Challenge Provincial Awardee is not only a celebration of an achievement—it is also a reflection of how Agribusiness education can shape perspectives, nurture entrepreneurial thinking, and turn opportunities into ventures with purpose.

𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 |KAMMPIL Agricoop, the NCRC technical team, and the Project Team came together for a two-day Business Plan Writeshop on September 9–10, 2026, at the TBI Boardroom, Visayas State University, Baybay City, Leyte.

Conducted under the project “Enhancing Competitiveness of Coconut-Based Enterprises in Eastern Visayas: Business Model Innovation through Dynamic Capability and Co-creation Approach,” the activity brought together participants from KAMMPIL Agricoop, NCRC, and the Project Team to collaboratively discuss, validate, and agree on the key assumptions that will form KAMMPIL's business plan for its desiccated coconut enterprise.

Through facilitated discussions, technical consultations, and collaborative working sessions, the participants consolidated key business plan inputs, identified information requiring further validation, and established the next steps toward completing a market-responsive, technically feasible, and financially viable business plan.

The VSU-DBM Project Team continues to advance its efforts in strengthening coconut-based enterprises in Eastern Visayas through process improvement, market engagement, strategic benchmarking, and business model innovation.

As part of the continuing implementation of the project, a series of technical and enterprise development activities was successfully conducted with partner farmer organizations across the region.

Through continuous collaboration with farmer organizations and technical partners, the project remains committed to bridging innovation, market opportunities, and enterprise development toward building more competitive and sustainable coconut-based industries in Eastern Visayas.

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗲-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝘆𝘁𝗲: 𝗜𝗻-𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴

The Visayas State University–Department of Business and Management (VSU-DBM), in collaboration with the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) Central Experiment Station, is undertaking the research project “Revisiting Rice-Based Products in Leyte: In-Depth Inventory and Profiling,” which aims to document and better understand the existing rice-based products, producers, production practices, enterprise experiences, and innovations across the province.

As part of the project, the VSU-DBM Project Team, headed by Mr. Vince G. Lao, together with the PhilRice team headed by Dr. Riza G. Abilgos-Ramos, conducted a four-day field visitation from August 17–20, 2026. The team visited selected rice-based product producers in Tabango, Ormoc City, Baybay City, and Bato, Leyte, engaging directly with local producers to learn about their products, processing methods, business practices, challenges, experiences, and innovations.

The field activity provided valuable insights into how rice and rice-derived resources are being transformed into value-added products and livelihood opportunities in different communities. More importantly, the project seeks to build a clearer picture of Leyte’s rice-based product landscape—identifying existing enterprises, documenting local practices and innovations, and generating information that may serve as a basis for future research, enterprise development initiatives, and appropriate support interventions.

The activity also included courtesy calls with the Dean of the Faculty of Management and Economics and the President of Visayas State University, reinforcing institutional support and collaboration for the successful implementation of the research project.

Through “Revisiting Rice-Based Products in Leyte,” VSU-DBM and PhilRice continue to bring research closer to communities by documenting local knowledge, recognizing enterprise innovations, and generating evidence that can contribute to the development and strengthening of Leyte’s rice-based product sector.
