DoPAC Molecule of the Week: Cisplatin

DoPAC at the 2026 VSU Academic Convocation

Villaber, joined the Visayas State University community for the 2026 Academic Convocation, together with University President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes and Director for Research Dr. Ivy C. Emnace.

DoPAC Molecule of the Week: ATP

More than a month into the semester, and yes, we need more energy.

Meet ATP (adenosine triphosphate), often called the energy currency of the cell. It provides usable energy that drives many essential cellular processes, from movement and transport to biosynthesis.

Much like ATP keeps cells going, we’re keeping the momentum alive as the semester gets busier, with lectures, laboratory work, experiments, deadlines, and discoveries ahead.

Here’s to a semester powered by curiosity, fueled by science, and driven by chemistry.

Beyond Chemistry, We Build Connections

The Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry was delighted to celebrate this year’s Acquaintance Party with our BS Chemistry students and the VSU Chemical Society!

Beyond the fun and laughter, the event reminded us that education is also about building relationships and creating a community where students and faculty can learn, grow, and support one another. And what better way for chemists to connect than through the elements?

During our getting-to-know-you activity, everyone picked an element and found their “elemental partner”, someone who picked the same element. Hopefully, you got to know your partner a little better and, of course, took that required photo together!

The Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry mourns the unfortunate loss of one of our graduating students, Mr. Alexander Jhon Loreto Templa, due to post-surgery complications.

Considered among his classmates and peers as a talented, religious, and reliable individual, Alex's sudden passing has those he left behind shocked and lost, just as he was expecting to receive his degree this month. To us, he was one who faced the academic program head on with an admirable silent grace and succeeded. He will always be remembered as one who took on challenges without hesitation, someone who was taken away from us too soon.

We encourage everyone to keep Alex, the Templa family, and all those affected by his passing in our prayers. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

The Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry proudly celebrates the return of one of its own, Dr. Ronald Arlet Pateriz Villaber, fresh from obtaining his PhD in Chemistry from the Texas Tech University in the United States.

With specialization in Structural Oncology and Translational Cancer Biochemistry, the department shares in Dr. Villaber's vision to further cancer research here in the region and in the Philippines.

The Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry along with the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (FNMS) celebrates the achievements of our graduates in this year's Chemist and Chemical Technician Licensure Examinations (CLE and CTLE) with a first-timer passing rate of 80% (overall 68.2%) for the CLE and 97.01% overall for the CTLE.

We also celebrate the triumph of 𝐌𝐫. 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐆. 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of the class of 2024 for securing Top 8 at this year's CLE with a rating of 92.15%.

The entire VSU community shares in your triumph - mga tunay na Tatak Viscans. May you all be an inspiration for those who are also aspiring to become Chemists and Chemical Technicians one day.
