VA Truth #1 Asking Questions Isn't Weakness, It's Professionalism.
One of the biggest mindset shifts I had to learn as a Filipino VA was that asking questions isn't disrespectful. Many of us grew up believing we should simply follow instructions, avoid questioning authority, and figure things out on our own.

But in the VA world, silence can lead to costly mistakes. Clients would rather answer a question today than fix a problem tomorrow.

The best VAs don't pretend to know everything, they ask, clarify, and communicate. That's how trust is built.

Read your last message to a client.

Did it start with "sorry"?

If yes! Let's talk about this, because it's one of the most invisible ways we shrink ourselves as Filipino VAs.

❌ "Sorry for the late reply" (when you replied in 3 hours)
❌ "Sorry to bother you" (when it's literally your job)
❌ "Sorry if this sounds wrong" (before a great idea)

Try this instead:

✅ "Thank you for your patience." (same warmth, more confidence)
✅ "I wanted to flag something important." (direct, professional)
✅ "Here's my recommendation" (own your expertise)

You are not a burden. Your communication is not an inconvenience. Stop prefacing your worth with an apology.

The energy you bring to your messages shapes how clients see you. Bring confident energy.

“I felt bad asking for a higher rate, so I just accepted their offer.”

I hear this every week from Filipino VAs. And every time, my heart aches a little.

Because here’s what actually happened in that moment:

You had a skill worth a certain price.
They offered less.
And you decided your discomfort with negotiating was worth more than the gap in your pay.

Negotiating is not rude. It is professional.

Here’s a script you can actually use:
“Thank you so much for the offer! Based on the scope of work, I was expecting [your rate]. Is there flexibility in the budget?”

Then, and this is important, stop talking. Let them respond.

Sometimes they say yes immediately. Sometimes they meet you halfway. Sometimes they say no, and that’s okay too. But you will never know if you never ask.
