Behind every achievement in engineering is a story shaped by uncertainty, persistence, and quiet resilience. For Engr. John Carlo Doria, the journey into petroleum engineering was never defined by certainty, but by the decision to keep moving forward despite it.

“𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞.”

In a field where opportunities can feel limited, doubt is almost inevitable. Yet instead of waiting for clarity, he chose commitment. It was never about having everything figured out from the beginning. It was about showing up each day, even when the direction ahead felt unclear.

During his academic years, the pressure to excel brought moments of self-doubt. Expectations were high, and comparison was easy to fall into. Still, he found a way to stay grounded by focusing on his own progress.

“𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐬.”

This mindset allowed him to grow steadily. Instead of chasing validation, he focused on improvement. Success became something personal, shaped by effort rather than comparison.

Beyond academics, his strength came from faith and the support of his family. In moments of failure, he turned to the Lord for strength. In moments of success, he chose gratitude. His family remained a constant source of motivation, reminding him of his purpose and helping him stay grounded through every challenge.

After graduation, a new reality set in. A degree alone did not guarantee opportunities. It was a humbling experience, one that pushed him to understand that growth does not stop in the classroom. It continues in the real world, where patience and consistency matter just as much as knowledge.

Rather than rushing success, he learned to trust timing.

He focused on steady improvement, committing to small and consistent steps forward.

“𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩… 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬, 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐦𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝.”

Today, as an engineer, he carries this mindset into his work. For him, engineering is not only about technical skill. It is about purpose. It is about contributing to an industry that powers lives and creates impact beyond oneself.

For those walking a similar path, his message is clear. Challenges are not meant to stop you. They are meant to shape you.
