On August 21, 1983, a gunshot at the Manila International Airport attempted to silence Ninoy Aquino. Instead, it awakened a nation. His assassination became a catalyst for the growing movement against the Marcos dictatorship, eventually leading thousands of Filipinos to the streets of EDSA, where people stood together in courage and solidarity for freedom and democracy.
As we commemorate Ninoy Aquino Day, we honor a man who chose to return home despite knowing that he might not leave it alive. He believed that the Filipino people were worth the risk. His sacrifice reminds us that freedom is never simply givenโit is protected and secured through sacrifice, unity, courage, and an unwavering faith in our people.
Let us carry his legacy forwardโin truth, in courage, and in love of country.
