His always stylish mother, Pilar Oswald, and his oldest (half) sister, Juanita Valera, who was well known for creating dresses for socialites who were their family friends, undoubtedly motivated him to pursue a career in fashion design when he was a young man. Although he never received any professional instruction in fashion design, his creations have become the gold standard for meticulous sewing, embroidery, and workmanship among fashion students. Ramon changed the traditional Maria Clara attire into a bridal gown with bell sleeves, which at first was thought to be a shame to the Filipina standard; he also created the one-piece terno, which is tied at the back with a zipper.

He served as president of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP), 1983-1984, and was a founding member of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines.
In his etchings, Castillo's strength lay in his inventive sense of design and exuberant use of folk motifs. Around 1972 sociopolitical concerns began to appear in his work, and he was detained for activism. He subsequently did a series of etchings on such themes as human rights violations and the people's struggle in the countryside. The only concession he made to his natural penchant for baroque fantasy consisted in the flying angels, symbols of the liberative spirit.

Born in Cebu City on 1912, Manuel Antonio Rodriguez Sr. has developed his love for the arts. He was mentored in the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts and by Philippine National artists Toribio Herrera, Fernando and Pablo Amorsolo,Fabian de la Rosa, and Ramon Peralta.

He was severely attacked for preserving an art form that was already regarded by others as "dead" when he introduced printmaking to the nation. Printmaking is primarily a procedure that uses printing to create artworks, with popular variations being etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts. He conducted workshops, invented machines, and developed techniques with younger artists in the Philippines (especially at the Philippine Women's University and the Contemporary Arts Gallery in Manila), passing on his knowledge and helping to spark the phenomenal growth of printmaking in the nation.

His passion for printmaking led him to founding the Philippine Association of Printmakers. His contributions to the development of his field earned him the title as the โ€œFatther of Philippine Printmakingโ€. ]
