Reading a sentence without punctuation mark can be confusing. 😵 The same goes when reading messages from your friends or colleagues. This can lead to misunderstanding and conflicts. 🗣️👥

In English grammar, there are 14 punctuation marks, and at least one of them must appear in every sentence. But how do you know which one is right for you, and how do you know if you're using it correctly ✅? To write more clearly and effectively, follow these basic punctuation rules. Here are the punctuation marks and rules:

📌 Full stop also known as period (.) Example: Mr. White was talking with Mr. Smith.

📌 The comma ( , ) Example:

📌 Question mark ( ? ) Example: Where are you from?

📌 Quotation marks (” “) Example: “I feel I’ve really earned this, ” she said, taking up her mug of tea.

Many students interchange the words listen and hear. There is, however, a significant difference between them.

HEARING🧏 implies that sounds enter your ears whether you want them to or not, whereas LISTENING 🎧 implies that you consciously pay attention to what you hear.

📌How to Use HEAR

HEAR (no effort) – A sound/ noise comes into your ear without you making an effort.

1. You do not make conscious decision to hear.
2. You physically experience the sense of sound.
3. Sometimes the sound you hear is sudden or unexpected like a noise, an alarm
or an explosion.

Examples:

▪️ Can you hear me?
▪️ Did you hear the thunder last night?
▪️ I didn’t hear what you said. Sorry
▪️ Could you speak louder, please? I couldn’t hear anything.
▪️ Can you hear the birds singing in the garden?
▪️ We heard a terrible noise when the cars crashed in front of our house.

LISTEN (no effort) – When you pay attention and try to listen to sounds

1. You make decision to listen
